Trapping Raccoons ?
« on: February 16, 2008, 08:53:36 AM »
We have a couple problem raccoons in the neighborhood and they have been hanging out in my neighbors and my yards . I was wondering if anyone has some live traps (or not so live traps) I could borrow for a little while to see if I can rid myself of them ?

Had a friend who had a similar problem that involved a coon and a fruit tree. He draped a pair of tire chains around the trunk of the tree from the lower branches using the chain rubbers to hang (ie insulate) the chains from the tree and then wired them up to 220 volts.  Next morning-fried coon. :o

I would prefer to trap them rather than have my daughters walk into the backyard and discover fried coon . I can prepare them for a dead or trapped one but they may balk at electrocuted .... LOL

I totally understand.  I felt like it was overkill (no pun intended) as well.  An old school Idaho ranchers response to vermin, but none the less quite effective.

Man , I thought NGO or some of the other guys into furs would have some answers for me here . I may have to go online and find a trapping website somewhere . I wish I still had all the small traps I used as a kid to catch the monster packrats we had at our cabin . Cat sized rodents were the norm .

Never really trapped anything mostly just set out some bait and stay up late one night and wait with a .22 with either a short or CB cap loaded up.

Just make sure that its a 1 shot kill anything more then that and the nieghbors might notice.

Neighbors are onboard with shooting them . Just thought if I could trap them I wouldnt have to pull an all nighter in a sleeping bag in the backyard . I will give F&G a call and see if they have some traps they can come and set up . If not I will have to put out some bait and prepare to be cold ... LOL

Need a "quiet" 22lr?  Subs in my 10/22 with the can are the way to go. Damn, wish I could loan it out. ;

Try Aguila 22lr Super Colibri ammo.  Very quiet.  Uses an ultra light bullet and just the primer-no powder.  Less report than a pellet rifle.

With the Tac Solutions Cascade supressor and Remington subsonics you get to throw a 40gr hollow point at 1000fps or so. My favorite "cat" combination.

Old and in the way - you can borrow my 22 bolt action, even have the subsonics for it and it is quieter than my pellet gun.

Use to lay some chink-link down and them have a hotdog on a spike in the center. 220volts and you will catch dogs coon, cats. But then you didn't want fried coon in the morning.
