Buying an AR in 7.62x39 is like buying a monster truck with a Civic engine, it just doesn't make sense, it's an abomination that should be done away with.
This thread is full of FAIL.

How do you feel about painting your AR with tacticool graphics?

I'm not sure how that is relevant to this. Does painting a weapon make it more reliable? No. Does it make it less reliable? No.

What are you getting at?

I wasn’t aware we were talking about things that make an AR more reliable.
I thought we were talking about things that make our beloved AR silly like a monster truck with a Civic engine or abomination’s that should be done away with.
I was asking you if you feel that painting you’re AR has more legitimacy than another man changing the caliber of his? After all isn’t this just a hobby for most of us? I for one think most of what we do to our weapons that make them internet sinperrific is silly and I think too many internet experts talk shit about what they think is cool or correct.

I took this post as Mopar wanting an AR platform rifle to use in the case of foreign attacks, this makes me think he would want something that is more universal and as reliable as possible.
If this is just a hobby gun, then by all means he and anyone else should do whatever they like to their guns.
Me painting my rifle has nothing to do with internet cool points, it was something that I wanted.
I haven't claimed to be an expert on this or anything else, I'm just one guy giving his opinion and it is just like an asshole, everyone has them and they all stink.

I'm thinking about building a 7.62x39 upper. I have a sks but I have 10s of thousands of rounds and years with my M16 and only a couple hundred rounds and a few hours with the sks. My question is what parts are interchangeable. The bare upper i can see being the same but i couldn't find a 7.62 specific bolt/carrier group. Is the only thing different the barrel or am i missing something on this. Also what other upper have been played with. Im trying to bulk up on ammo so 7.62 just seems logical.

I didn't read the part about foreign attack!

and more than likely for an inferior product. Let's be honest here the "just as good as" mentality is crap. You get what you pay for...buy quality shit. If you can't afford to buy quality equipment hold off and save up the money, if you are too hard headed and refuse to pay that kind of money then I wish you luck on your cheaper product that is "just as good as" the expensive stuff I know is going to hold zero and go BOOM everytime.

I'm throwing my two cents in on this whole thread....why buy a 7.62x39 AR in the first place? Just buy a nice AK or "settle" for a quality AR in a more proven caliber. 5.56 is a known performer in the platform, sure some of you are going to argue that 5.56 doesn't have the stopping power, if you are that concerned buy some 75-77 gr ammo and be happy. Buying an AR in 7.62x39 is like buying a monster truck with a Civic engine, it just doesn't make sense, it's an abomination that should be done away with. You want cheaper ammo? Steal cased, Russian crap 7.62x39 most likely won't function correctly in the platform! If the gun isn't going to run whatever you feed it what's the point?

One company makes the magazines! ONE DAMN COMPANY!!! Let's call this a clue! Why put all your eggs in one basket? Look at the AR in 5.56, Pmags, Lancer, H&K, GI issue, their are dozens of options. Look at AKs, again dozens of options.

This thread is full of FAIL.

But I did read the part about opinion's just like an asshole.

One point i got a giggle out of. "Buying an AR in 7.62x39 is like buying a monster truck with a Civic engine, it just doesn't make sense" I think it would be more like putting a monster truck engine in a civic and that sounds like a awesome idea.

Hahaha that's exactly what I was thinking.
7.62x39 hits harder, makes a bigger hole, is cheaper, and has a heavier bullet... What's not to love?! :)
Maybe if we called it 7.62 MRM  (medium range round) people would like it more.  People love calibers with with acronyms.

Hi, my name is BadtzMaru and I am full of fail.  :-[ :-[ :-[

I have a 7.62x39 AR and like it a lot.  I got a deal from a member of a now-defunct forum for the barrel/flashhider and bolt.  I think it is a Shaw barrel but it has no markings other than the caliber.  The bolt - ????.  I used a YHM upper receiver, CMMG carrier and lower receiver/lpk.  YHM iron sites.  I've only used C-products 5 and 10 round mags.  Gun is pretty accurate - enough so that I would feel comfortable hunting with it as long as I didn't need shots over about 200 yards.  I have not had any feed problems with the magazines.  I have mostly used Golden Tiger ammo which is steel-cased and haven't broken anything yet.  Everyone I talk to says get a spare bolt and the small parts to rebuild one.  The main issue is that the "ears" on the bolt may break over time.

My original thought was to build a gun that would be cheap to feed and shared ammo with my AKs.  At the time commie ammo was about half of what .223 or 5.56 was going for.  Now - not so much.  Still, it's fun to shoot and something a little different.
