New stock came in today
« on: February 13, 2007, 06:03:55 PM »
I got a new stock today for my M1a.  Well, not really new.  It's a military take off.  Apparently an Army (stock is marked ARMY inside) SF (what I was told and only ones that would probably have been using M14's) unit upgraded to Sage stocks and a few of these take offs made it to the civilian market.  I got one for a song (and dance).

It's beat up just like you'd expect and it has the cutout for the M14 auto selector.  Cool stuff.  Bipod was included too.

Here's what it looks like:

Did you get it all put together yet? Can't wait to see it.

Oh yea.  Feels great.  It does add 1 lb 10 oz to the M1a but now the scope is actually usable.  I'm heading to the shooting spot tomorrow to "break it in."  I'll take a pic if I remember.

So give us a little more feedback. It sounds like its coming together (rifle and shooting).

Maybe the weather will hold out for tomorrow.

First,  the scope is now usable.  The original stock was so low that the scope was pretty much unusable.  Unfortunately, the scope that's on it sucks.  It would do fine on a hunting rifle but I don't like The Nikoplex reticle and it's pretty hard to use at 18x.  So, a new scope is in the works.

Once that happens I'll reevaluate and decide if it's a keeper.

Second, the grip is just about perfect.  This is the first McMillan stock that I've handled and I can say that I understand now why people like them so much.

The bedding job was pretty messy.  If I keep it I'll probably skim bed it myself.

Sounds good! This stock is what you were looking for. More comfortable than a standard stock and anything to get better alignment with the scope will help.

Here it is at the shooting spot today.  I does need to be rebedded before it's going to shoot very well.  But it sure handles great.

The colors in the above picture were really washed out.  So, I reprocessed the picture and now it looks closer to the real deal.

I think that stock is all worn out and borders on being a POS.

I might do that.  If I don't get a job soon I think I'll be selling the M1a.

Hey Jeff your copywrite date is off, it's 2007 bud!

Nice stock, so what did you pay if you don't mind my asking?

Haha, yea, I saw that.  Oh well, it's just there to keep honest people honest anyway.

I traded a Magpul PRS with tube, buffer, and spring for it.
