Red Dawn 2010
« on: June 11, 2010, 12:01:30 PM »
No official trailer yet but it sounds promising:

Synopsis
In RED DAWN, an American city awakens to the surreal sight of foreign paratroopers dropping from the sky - shockingly, the U.S. has been invaded and their hometown is the initial target.

Quickly and without warning, the citizens find themselves prisoners and their town under enemy occupation.  Determined to fight back, a group of young patriots seek refuge in the surrounding woods, training and reorganizing themselves into a guerilla group of fighters.

Taking inspiration from their high school mascot, they call themselves the Wolverines, banding together to protect one another, liberate their town from its captors, and take back their freedom.

This time, the BG's are Chinese instead of Russian.  There are some user-made vids of the filming here.  I only found it because of this story noting some people's PC response to the forthcoming film:

"Later this year, America's dream factory will foist upon an already blooded-up America a remake of 1984's 'Red Dawn.' It's probably the most unnecessary, irresponsible, Sinophobic film in America's history, and that's saying a lot," wrote a commentary at The Awl, a New York-based website that boasts of its discussions on "the issues of the day."

I doubt we see this in 2010.  It may never get finished. No status updates since 2009.  http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1234719/
Q: What was the most positive result of the "Cash for Clunkers" program?
A: It took 95% of the Obama bumper stickers off the road.

Doh!  Shoot, I didn't notice that.

Wolver—!!!! Whoa, whoa, not so fast there, kids. At least, not if MGM doesn’t get its shit together very soon, anyway. As with “The Hobbit” films and the Bond movies, the fate of Dan Bradley’s directorial debut, the remake of “Red Dawn” currently hangs in limbo, all thanks to MGM’s money woes. Although the film itself has been in production for a while now up North, the current news is that the film’s initial November release date has disappeared in a puff of smoke, and the remake has now been cast into the land of Tba — To Be Announced.

Unfortunate, sounded like it had the potential to be good.

Reanimating this thread.  There has been an update:

http://www.movieweb.com/news/red-dawn-eyeing-2011-release-date
With MGM's restructuring plan complete after a $500 million line of credit from JPMorgan, there has been much news made about the studio's move to get both The Hobbit and James Bond 23 into production. But what about the films MGM shelved during its bankruptcy? Not much has been said about those languishing projects, though we have word this morning that Dan Bradley's Red Dawn remake, the most anticipated movie on their halted slate, may finally see a release sometime in 2011.

Red Dawn was shelved indefinitely early this year, at which time Bradley lobbied to have the war thriller picked up by Fox for a November release date. That never happened, and the completed film has sat on a shelf unseen ever since. The story revolves around a ragtag team of high school students who fight to save their town against a Chinese invasion.

With the film gearing up for a potential 2011 release date, it will now be going head-to-head with the similarly themed Tomorrow, When the War Began. Already a hit in Australia and other parts of the world, this adaptation of the John Marsden novel also pits a group of high school students against an invading army.

Those most excited to finally see Red Dawn crawl out of purgatory are the residents of Royal Oaks, Michigan, who participated in the faux invasion of their hometown. Many families were cast to take part in some of the bigger action scenes, and MGM's resurrection plan comes as a sign of hope that they will finally see their hard work on the big screen. The official release date will most likely land in the fall, as MGM isn't expected to fully emerge from Chapter 11 bankruptcy for several more months.

Chinese in parachutes - why is that so hard for me to get my head wrapped around ?

Greetings, and God bless.

Here's a review of the new "Red Dawn" remake from the Libertas Film Magazine web site. The reviewer actually got to see the original version in which the Chicoms are still the bad guys instead of the North Koreans. The web site itself deals with liberty and freedom oriented movies and is worth exploring for its own sake.

Please note that the review contains a number of "spoiler alerts".

Looks cool, hopefully they won't screw it up and have the UN come in and save the day or some nonsense.

Just to get on a soap box for a second.  I was halfway interested in seeing this movie when it was first being talked about, mostly for the novelty.  I think this movie is "supposed" to be about freedom and sacrifice, at least the original one was.  The situation, politics or what ever you want to call it, surrounding this movie is the antithesis of those ideals.  But that's just one guy's opinion.
When the last deer disappears into the morning mist,
When the last elk vanishes from the hills,
When the last buffalo falls on the plains,
I will hunt mice, for I am a hunter,
And I must have my freedom.
