Local source for quick connect/disconnect sling hooks?
« on: May 18, 2010, 08:23:33 AM »
I'm making a paracord sling for the AR and have reached the point where I want to finish off the ends.  I wanted to put some kind of quick release hooks on it, maybe similar to Magpul's MS2 below.  I've checked Cabela's and the Army/Navy store but it seems like kind of specialized parts.  Is there anyplace around here that I can find something like this or does it have to be ordered online?

While not local, they are available here http://milspecmonkey.com/store/products/category/8/tactical-gear.html?limit=20&start=20

I bought a couple from this site, one is in use on my EMDOM Universal Rig Strap and the other is in my box of spare parts.

Impact Guns had some QD sling hooks the last time I was in there?

I believe they were the HK style hooks?

You're looking for a Snap Shackle, and you if you're trying to source them locally check boating stores.

Scarecrow is right. I've gotten them from sailing supply houses in the past. The other snap is typically found on higher end dog leashes.

I think the ARMY surplus store has some.  I think I bought some from there last time I was down there. :P

Kind of off topic, but Thank You Jeff for sharing the Outdoor Wilderness Fabric information.  Kopel's used to sell some of that type of stuff and I have wondered where to find it locally.   Thanks!

9Shooter, would you mind sharing a picture of your sling when you are done?  Just curious.

dvc,
ron

Thanks everyone for all the suggestions, I'll try a couple of places over the weekend.

@dvc: Yeah, I'll put up some pics.  I wish I had taken one or two at the beginning too but before I knew it, I was already at 3 feet.  Not going to unravel it now ;)

9shooter,

I have a couple of brass snap shackles. They have round eyes on the standing end. You are welcome to one if it suits your needs.

Thanks for the offer RG.  I ended up driving around today to see if I could find anything.

Update and pics of the finished sling:

I went to a couple of places today to find the shackles I wanted.  Army/Navy and 7th Heaven didn't have them but they guy at 7th said Boise Rigging probably would.  They were closed so I hit Lowe's.  They had something that was close enough for me.  Total cost for the sling was under $10.

Since I didn't get pics when I first started, I took this one of the rear section as I began today.

This is the front section before attaching the ring I added for the single point conversion.
[attachment=2]

This is the entire front section with ring attached.
[attachment=3]

Here it it connected as a two-point sling.
[attachment=4]

This is the same thing in the single-point configuration.

These guys sell some high end hardware http://www.paragear.com/templates/parachutes.asp?group=34 .

I was looking at the COBRA quick release for a sling project I'm working on.

Also note the "V" RING at the bottom of the page for belts.
