Dat ders American ingenuity!

I think it would be more efficient if the chimney was narrower.

Yes, it works, but what's the point?  Obviously, you wouldn't want to carry a bunch of cinder blocks on a fishing or hunting trip - a portable BBQ is much easier to deal with.  At home, just buy a regular size charcoal or propane BBQ.

This is the "preparedness" forum, no?

You could use flat stones and do the same thing.

IMO, the knowledge in itself is worthwhile.  While I hope we never need such a stove at least we can all make one if needed.  ;)

Also, without much extra work you could use the stove as a heat source for a large brick (or clay) oven by piping the exhaust around the oven (think dual layers).

I think Jeff has the right idea. Strive to understand the concepts behind the scenes and you can apply them elsewhere or combine them with other concepts...

I am going to echo Jeff and RG here.  The concept is the important part.  We had a mock disaster with some friends and I was shocked at how little my daughters understood.  They left the house with light jackets (it was cold and spitting snow) open shoes with no socks and fluff in their heads.   Sooooo we are going to do some stove building, fire starting, getting ready, shelter building, water purifying etc. with what ever they can find lying around exercises.  As a reward, we are going to go camping and they will get to use some of the skills they gained.

My biggest concern with a SHTF scenario is the people who have no clue how to take care of them selves.  When they get hungry and thirsty they will only think of how to take something from someone else.

Yes it does, as long as you have a shovel, or the ground isn't too hard.

They more tools we have, the better our chance, and I mean tools as in knowledge.

Thanks NGO.

Easier than carring stack of bricks around. :sarcoff:

Besides I think Injins were making these before they had shovels.  Use a stick or a rock, takes more time and effort but it can be done.
