223 Rem long range shooting
« on: April 18, 2010, 12:59:24 PM »
 Been shooting a 223 at 300 to 500 yards with a 75gr bthp bullet.
Shooting at these distances the wind really havoc with these
light bullets.
Is any one else shooting pasty 300 yds and if so what weight of bullet
are you using. Powder weight single and cases prepped........
The best group has been with RL-15 past max by one gr, win brass, 205m.
 Using a bolt gun......
Thinking of trying an AR with an 18" barrel and a 75gr bullet too....Thanks Nomad....

We just took our AR’s out on Friday to Twin and shot at rock chucks out past 300.
Longest confirmed kill 428 – longest shot 520, we seen him get hit but could not find the evidence.
Gusty winds really wreaked havoc on the little .223 bullets “300 shoots and only 20 confirmed kills” but all and all still a good time.
FYI we used the 36GR Barnes at 4000 FPS.

I'm getting out to 900 yards with 55grain FMJBT with a 26 inch tube.
Chrony'd at 3400fps.

At 900 yards I need 3.5moa or 1 mil more wind correction tha with a .308
At 900 yards the bullet is done so have not tried past that.

800 yards is way easier than 900 yards with this rifle/bullet combo.

I haven't shot my AR in a year or two, but the last time I was out I was hitting milk jugs at 350-400 yards first shot in some slight desert winds with a 55gr Nosler Ballistic tip.  They are leaving our 24" Varmiters at ~3300 (according to our Chrony).
I have more issues with the temperature than the wind usually.

Out of my 18" 3 gun rifle, and 68gr Sheepdog ammo, I need about 2 MOA for a 400y target with a full value 8-10mph wind.  Not really going for accuracy but more speed with that though.
