How to cook without electricty?
« on: April 14, 2010, 08:36:12 PM »
I just purchased my year supply. Now I am looking at ways to cook the food, if there is no power. I like the idea of solar ovens but I see the disadvantage of depending on the sun. My parents went out bought the Cobb which requires charcoal briquettes, not dependent upon the sun. I live in an apartment so I don't tons and tons of space. What is the best way to cook food for extended periods of time without electricity? I would appreciate any ideas. Thanks.

What do you mean by extended periods of time?  If the power goes out for an extended amount of time, we'd haul out the propane camp stove.  A few dozen 1 lb. propane bottles are cheap, easy to store and will do alot of cooking.  Also will provide light and heat, if need be.

If you mean an extended period of time as in forever, then you're gonna have to build a fire.

apartment???

cooking may be the least of your problems in a  long period of time without electrcity...

water supply and sewer disposal will likely be what drives you out.

what will you be cooking? Refrigerator will be empty after a couple days.

Winter time, what about heat?  Have you tried staying in the apartment during July?

with all that said...apartment...Rocket stove.  If you have a soruce of fuel...that everyone else isn't using up quicker than you.

I am pretty sure that I am over-thinking this but I would like to find a way to cook food say if the power goes out from just a few days to even a few months. I would like to know that even without electricity, I would be able to cook what emergency food supply that I have. I don't have a home so I am unable to stockpile  bunch of propane or such. My parents have a property with tons of wood but I might not be able to make it up there in case of an emergency so I need to be prepared so that I can take care of myself. What are your thoughts on the solar ovens? Or would something like a Habachi or a Cobbs stove be better?

OK say electricty is off for more than a month....would you even have a job??  How would you get gas for your vehicle?

Would you even have a reason to live in your apartment?

About the only way you could cook meals - after the propane and charcoal briquettes have run out - is to use wood sticks in something like the rocket stove.

See my review:

I doubt that I would have a job, if the power went out. I doubt that there would be fuel left for vehicles unless people had large personal tanks of fuel for their vehicles. I am just thinking that what good is a year supply of food, if you don't have a means to cook it or make use of it. Seriously, if there was a natural disaster of some kind or something that cut me off from immediately heading to my parents than I need to have something prepared so that I don't starve to death. My primary BO spot is my parent's house but that is 360 miles away so there are things that could possibly block me from getting there. I guess partially my time in the military taught me that if something can go wrong it usually will.

years worth of food is good...

Maybe store some of it in locked containers at your parents ( You know steel to keep rodents out)...have enough here for short term SHTF ( month or two at most)...some cached along the way in case you need to hike, bike or horse back ride to get their...assuming you didn't get out of Dodge quick enough...

I figure on running for my BOL and if nothing happens I have sick time I can take and a doctor buddy who will right an excuse for more than 2 days of sick time off and even the possibility of shortterm sick leave if needed...

That way, if things calm down, I can always come back to work....

when i took hunters ed a loooong time ago the instructor showed us how to make a quick little stove. the burner was made out of a tuna fish can with cardboard spiraled up inside. then filled with wax. i use the burner as a fire starter when camping. the stove part was just a coffee can with a slot in the bottom to slide the burner in and a few vent holes on top. on shoot day he made everyone breakfast using a few of these. i'll look around for pics.

edit: something like this

Yeah, I have plan A covered...
Plan B is pretty well covered too...

Plan C is an idea of what can be done

Plan D is more like an idea of what could be done

Beyond that plane e,f,g,.... I pretty much expect to be made while running and saying to myself " Shit!, Now what genies?" "Wonder where can I get a wheelbarrow?"
