Pricing some old guns
« on: March 26, 2010, 10:46:21 AM »
These will soon be in the possession of my sister-in-law and I'm trying to get a close guess on what they'd be worth.  She is trying to figure out whether to keep/insure them or sell them.  I've looked on gunbroker and have ballpark ideas but don't have any more concrete information.  Any feedback would be appreciated.

1. Made in Austria, original Mannlicher Schoenauer Model 1952 30-06. Double Set Triggers.  Redfield Scope 3 By 9, 1 inch tube. Pachmayer Low Swing Mount

THe first one depending if it is a carbine or not From $1875 to $600  or non carbine $1650 to $550
The browning is a hard one.  Would have to have the suffix to ascertain the the year.  But the autos there were so many manufactured could be anything from $2000 to $550
The last one I am stumped on.  Looks kind of like those guns they gave a way once you filled out your punch card getting gas a long time ago.  Is it a .22?

The last one is a single shot derringer in .30 cal.  The barrel swivels out to the side for loading.

When I worked at a large gun shop in central Illinois, Mannlichers were like gold. Those and Kleingunthers.  I would imagine to the right crowd, that one should go over $800. It might be a regional thing.  I would think that might more geared towards a collector than a shooter.
The A-5 looks to be a third issue. Is the barrel still tight on the barrel extension?  Second issue A-5's were prone to having the two separate.  The problem was supposed to be rectified by the beginning of the third issue guns.  (I learned this the hard ($) way.) BTW, I have a sales brochure from Browning (for a third issue A-5) that says a properly lubricated Browning A-5 takes 10,000 rounds ---TO BREAK IN!   I would guess the A-5 at about $500 or more.
    The derringer....haven't a clue.

That is sweet, not the caliber I'd want but sweet none the less. Easily worth $K if condition is reflected by the photos. I want one!

Thanks for the comments so far.  What I found on gunbroker was the following based on the year/make/model of the first two:

1. 30-06: I couldn't find a 30-06 caliber model being sold and there was a pretty large range of values.  $1600-$4500 was the price range, and there was no real average grouping.  Prices were all scattered depending on age, caliber, etc.  A 1952 .270 caliber is about $1600, but other years' 30-06 would be around $2700.

2. 12ga: Average price looks to be around $1500.  Lower end was $500 and upper end is $9800.

I was trying to figure out if I was in the ballpark or had totally missed something.  I know price is based on demand, and that fluctuates all the time.  I know there are books out there that have price info but I don't have one.

I like that derringer... I'd give you $50 for it.. :)

Ummm I found some stuff under Cowles & Son on the google here:

Most of the way down, there's a picture that looks a lot like yours:
http://www.littlegun.be/derringer/a%20colt%20gb.htm

Here's an expired gunsamerica auction, no picture anymore though:
http://www.gunsamerica.com/976904325/Guns-For-Sale/Gun-Auctions/Pistols/Antique/Cowles_son_Deringer.htm

A .22 version that has lots of pictures:
http://theantiquegunroom.com/detail.php?f_qryitem=514

The gunsamerica price was $350, the Antique gunroom one was $1895...  Either one's more than $50. :(

You might be able to contact the owners of these sites for some more info or something.

Good luck!
Dan
