primer question
« on: March 08, 2010, 03:20:00 PM »
I was primeing up some .243 and accidentally primed 10 rounds with Large rifle Magnum primers.
I haven't loaded them yet but I was wondering if they would be safe to use with the load I have,

The load is  44.0 grains of Varget with a 58 grain V-max. The max in the Hornday manual is 44.2 and hogdon website says 44.0 is max.

will I be ok if I use the magnum primers for these 10 rounds, or should i just pop them in the rifle and re-use the brass.

Well,
Ten years ago I would have said pop/waste them. In this day and age, popping primers is a spendy proposition for some.

44.2 vs 44.0 there is about 4/10 of a percent difference so for all intents and purposes you are at max. Unless I had been to say 45gr before, I wouldn't load with 44.0 and the new primer. I would however load at 43.0 and shoot them. Your load work up most likely would support that and I'd bet within 500yds, you won't see the difference in impact. Squirrels won't know the difference either.

Some people are like Slinkies - not really good for anything, but you can't help but smile when you see one tumble down the stairs.

yeah normally i would just pop em but seeing as i dont have many large rifle magnum primers in the first place i would rather use them then waste em.

Ill just down load em and give em a try.

The power of the Internets produced this for me ..... http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090112234333AAVGf7H

I have been running Small Rifle Magnum primers in all my .223 loads for quite some time , but then again I am not running max loads either .
