IAWCA Semi & Full Auto Rifle Match
«
on:
February 16, 2010, 12:41:13 AM »
The Idaho Automatic Weapons Collectors' Association (IAWCA) will be holding it's annual Semi & Full Auto Rifle Match on Saturday April 3rd.
Location: Parma Rod & Gun Club Range
Registration Begins: 8:00 am
Mandatory Safety Meeting: 9:15 am
Event Begins: 9:30 am
Entry Fee: members: $20
non-members: $30
Shoot both semi-auto and full-auto classes for $5 more
Spectators Free and always welcome!
Description: This one day event will feature various stages to test competitors’ skills with semi-auto or full auto rifles/carbines. Bring out your semi-auto or select fire assault rifle for a day of fun. (AP ammo not permitted!) There is a Ladies Class.
For details, contact Steve Markel 208-362-2390 or
stevemarkel@hotmail.com
The website is still a little rough from a rewrite, but you check it out at:
http://www.iawca.org
misc notes...
Targets will range from in-your-face to 400 yards.
Semi-Auto class would be your run of the mill AR-15, Mini-14, etc.
Full-Auto class would be M-16 and other rifle caliber shoulder fired machine guns.
I would suggest a minimum of 200 rounds, 300 just in case. Unless you run a reliable Beta, you probably need a couple mags or more.
You will NOT need a pistol or shotgun, this is strictly a rifle match.
As I understand it, the match will consist of 4 stages.
A long range stage with scoring targets out to 300-400 yards.
A stage with a moving target at about 20 yards.
An IPSC kind of stage with shots out to 70-80 yards.
A surprise stage which I am designing.
I will try and answer any questions you may have. Be patient, as I only lurk here occasionally (until I complete a couple projects).
DVC,
Ron

That would be correct. Except for you. Gonna cost you $70 to play!
Full autos have to be in that mode, not semi (or fast finger semi). I think if the gun has a full auto mode and burst mode, it has to be set to full auto. Just about all of the folks I have seen shooting the full autos have the trigger control down pat and "don't need no stinkin' burst mode". (Is mode the correct term?)
I am not sure how they are going to handle the folks that want to shoot both classes. Since my stage is a surprise stage it may throw a monkey wrench in the mix. I will check into that and post back.

Somehow I knew that was coming! If I shoot both classes, it will be with a full auto gun. I have to see if I can get some things worked out first. Thanks!

Ron,
To answer your "surprise stage" question. If a person chooses to shoot both classes the must choose 1 class to be officially scored prior to shooting. hope that clears things up

Kaene,
Thank you. That was the direction Steve suggested (and I agree), but I had not followed up on it prior to your response. I have been busy building and testing a couple props for the stage and getting everything together and planned out. Many, many thanks to my friend Rick, who is helping with the construction and logistics.
Thanks,
Ron

If you are coming to the match, remember your rain gear, cold gear, and mud gear! Because of the high winds promised for tonight I had to scale back the surprise stage I have been working on. It will still be a surprise stage with no walk through, but it won't be as long. There is still some work to be done in the morning and my guess is the match itself may be a little late starting. Everything will depend on what mother nature does to the range tonight.
Shoot Safe!

Your help would be most welcome. It would save me a scoresheet too!
Actually they may need a little help on the other stages, so if you have your work gloves...

The match went well from aside from some delay getting the surprise stage ready. I blame the weather on Friday for that. I was totally soaked by 3 on Friday and lost about 4 hours of setup time. The weather also cause a redesign because I was afraid the high winds Friday night would flatten them.
I would like to say a great big Thank You to MGM Targets for the use of an Attack Target and other equipment. The Attack Target startled more than one shooter as it attacked them. I would also like to thank IAWCA for the opportunity to do the stage, my friend Rick for helping build props, the IAWCA members who helped me setup and tear down the stage. I would also like to thank the shooters that helped with taping and resetting.
If I remember correctly, times ran from about 140 seconds up to 400+. Round count was 46. A full auto shooter with a beta mag ended the stage with 1 (one) round left in the mag. We had two popup targets that many people never saw popup (or never tried to shoot, not sure which). The Attack Target triggered two swingers so when it started its attack, things got busy quick.
Since we don't always have the perfect shooting position, we threw in a barricade with a slot to shoot through. I measured wrong
and the slot was too short to accommodate the typical rifle sight so the shooter had to cant the rifle to get the sight in play. Like I said, we don't always have the perfect shooting position...
The weather was pretty decent Saturday (aside from the wind) so if you stayed home because of the weather, ya missed a mess of fun.

Thank you Todd. I wish the weather had been better cuz I had more fun stuff planned for the surprise stage. (and it would have been nice to see, let alone shoot, the other stages.)
IAWCA is a great group of people and you do not have to own full auto goodies to join. If you don't own a class 3 firearm you can join as an Associate member (like me). This match and the PSS in October include non-full auto classes. Anyone who shot the match... If you had fun at the match and are not a member, consider joining.
If you are interested in full auto firearms check out their website
http://www.iawca.org
. There are a number of full auto only events that may be worth watching.
Thanks,
Ron
