Seeds?
« on: February 13, 2010, 02:15:00 PM »
So where are you all buying seeds from this year? I was planning to going over to Zamzows, but I was wondering if there is a better place to check out in Treasure Valley. Does Zamzows carry heirloom seeds or are they mainly hybrid?

Some of the places on the internet seem a bit pricey for heirloom seeds.

This will be the first time since I was a little kid that I have tried to grow a garden, so I just want some decent seeds that will grow. Ultimately I would like to get some heirloom seeds.

I've heard that Zamzows seed packs have more seeds in them than others.  I'm sure some are heirloom.  You'll just have to make sure about what you get.

Greetings and God bless.

Yea, a lot of those heirloom seeds can be pricey. This is about the best looking deal I've found:

When buying seeds from Zamzows you have to be careful that you dont buy ones that are neutered.

What do you mean "neutered"?

You might also call one of the better garden stores, like Edwards Greenhouse -- http://www.edwardsgreenhouse.com/

By neutered I mean the seed companies are engineering the seeds to where they will produce but the seeds from those plants will not.  That way you have to keep buying seeds.

They're called hybrids.

Just be sure to save enough seeds from your garden, this year, to plant your next year's garden. Do this every year and you'll never have to worry about buying seeds again.

Hybrids are supposed to have some benefits like disease resistance. Unfortunately by crossing the two different plants the seed that the hybrid plant produces may or may not be very viable. You typically should not have that problem with heirloom seeds. That's why from a survival point of view, you want heirloom seed.

The campingsurvival.com website some seem to have a pretty good deal for longer term seed storage.

Also, Edwards Greenhouse seems pretty interesting, I'll have to check them out.

I haven't decided exactly what I'm going to be planting yet, but I was thinking some carrots, potatoes, corn, spinach, radishes, and maybe some lettuce.

I stopped over at Zamzows today and they had some organic seeds that specifically stated they were open pollinators and not hybrid.
