Howdy all,
Here is some smallbore fun out at Parma this year.

.22 Tactical Precision Rifle Match Series for 2010

The Parma Rod and Gun Club has four .22 Tactical Precision Rifle Matches scheduled in 2010.

The dates are:
•   Saturday, May 8th, 2010
•   Saturday, June 19th, 2010
•   Saturday, July 17th, 2010
•   Saturday, August 21st, 2010

Sign up at 8:30am, walk-through at 8:45am, shooing starts at 9am.

Location: Parma Rod and Gun Club – Parma, Idaho   http://www.parmarng.org/

Directions: http://www.parmarng.org/MapToRange/MapToRange.html

.22 Tactical Precision Rifle Matches combine several different types of rifle shooting into a fun and exciting new sport.

.22 Tactical Precision Rifle combines:
•   tactical scenarios
•   precision fire
•   practical field shooting
•   action shooting
•   long range/distance shooting

From its start, these rifle matches have been primarily focused on being a fun and affordable shooting sport.  Courses of fire are designed to be shot with inexpensive factory rifles and reasonably priced scopes.

.22 Tactical Precision Rifle Matches are adaptations of centerfire Tactical/Precision match formats to rimfire rifles.  The reason for this is rimfire is much less expensive to shoot than centerfire.  This allows shooters to train, practice and shoot more.

These matches are multi-stage, multi-distance events that shooters will find challenging and fun.  The stages are shot at shorter, caliber-appropriate distances.  Target sizes and distances are reduced to scale specifically for .22 rimfire rifles.

The targets are reactive steel and are at distances that vary from 25 to 250 yards.  Steel targets provide instant shooter feedback and make the matches flow better because the firing line is not shut down from time to time to score paper targets.

Come on out and give it a try!  .22 Tactical Precision Rifle Matches are challenging, very affordable, and will test and develop your rifle marksmanship skills.  It is fun stuff and you’ll meet some new fellow shooters.

Equipment
.22 rimfire rifle - bolt action, semi auto, pump, etc.

Optics are highly, highly recommended and really preferred.
•   If one wants to shoot with iron sights (like an Appleseed rifle), go for it. Just realize the game is built around scoped rifles.
•   You can see all the targets with the naked eye from the firing line so a peep rear and post front sight will work if you have enough adjustment to get to 250 yards.
•    A Mil-Dot scope is recommended but not necessary.

A bipod can be useful, but one can shoot off a ruck or backpack if preferred.

Spotting optics - binoculars or a spotting scope are helpful, but one can use their rifle scope for spotting (a cheap $20 pair of binoculars will work great too).

Transport gear - rucksack, duffle, backpack, or shooters box to transport stuff from firing position to position.

Ground gear - shooting mat, blue tarp, knee and elbow pads, old hunk of carpet, or nothing, shooters choice.

Dope sheet-you should have ‘come-up’ data out to 300 yards.

Misc. gear as needed.

Rules
Safety first!  The 4 rules apply so engage your brain.
The 1st Law of Gun Safety - The Gun Is Always Loaded!
The 2nd Law of Gun Safety - Never Point A Gun At Something You're Not Prepared To Destroy!
The 3rd Law of Gun Safety - Always Be Sure Of Your Target And What Is Behind It!
The 4th Law of Gun Safety - Keep Your Finger Off The Trigger Until Your Sights Are On The Target!

Unsafe actions by you will mean a disqualification from the match.
A hit is defined as making the steel target move (ricochet, dirt splash or chain strikes do not count).  Any paper is scored as defined by COF description.
Only .22 Short, Long, or Long Rifle rimfire ammo is allowed,
.17 rimfire or .22WMR is not allowed.
Divisions are: Semi-Auto Rifle, All Other Action Types, and Juniors.

Match details
12 stages, approx 120 scored rounds
Bring 200 rounds
Entry fee = $10
Match should last until around noon
Bring your own drinks and snacks
The match will be shot at the Small Bore Range which has several gravel firing positions in addition to a concrete firing line so bring a shooting mat or tarp if you don’t want to roll around in the gravel.

Here is an article in 6mmbr on Tac.22

These guys poineered the sport.
Of couse they do things wrong because they have way too much paper and only get out to 200 yards but it is a good reference point to start with.

here is a bit more info on Tac.22

Ballistics Comparisons

A 250 yard .22 rimfire shot closely replicates a 1,000 yard shot from a .308 Winchester and here is why.

We will compare CCI Green Tag .22 rimfire ammunition to the .308 Winchester.
(CCI Green Tag is/was reasonably priced match grade ammo)

•   The standard cartridge for centerfire Tactical/Precision rifle matches is the .308 Winchester.  It has a 175 grain Sierra Match King bullet with a Ballistics Coefficient of .490. This bullet is fired at a muzzle velocity of 2600 feet per second.
•   CCI Green Tag ammunition has a 40 grain bullet with a Ballistics Coefficient of .125.  This bullet is fired at a muzzle velocity of 1070 feet per second.

For the .22 rimfire to get to 250 yards and the .308 to get to 1,000 yards they both need approximately the same elevation dialed into the scope, which is about 40MOA up from zero (25 yard zero for .22 and a 100 yard zero for .308).

Wind corrections are also very similar between a 250 yard .22 rimfire shot and a 1,000 yard .308 shot.  For example, a 10 mph cross-wind(full-value) at 250 yards with a .22 rimfire needs approximately the same MOA correction as a 1,000 yard shot with a.308 (10MOA of wind adjustment).

“Target sizes and distances are reduced to scale specifically for .22 rimfire rifles.”

What size targets will you use at each distance?

“A bipod can be useful, but one can shoot off a ruck or backpack if preferred.”

Will all stages be shot from the prone position?

“Equipment .22 rimfire rifle - bolt action, semi auto, pump, etc.”
Will all types of actions shoot and be scored together?

I’m thinking of using a Ruger 10/22 with a cheap scope but I’m assuming I would have to do some work on it to shoot at these distances successfully.

Steel target sizes vary from a 3.5 inch disk to 9x15 inches.  It depends on the stage.  They are all hittable and realistic.

Right now about 1/2 of the match is prone with a bi-pod.  The other half is termed 'alternate positions' and is any or all of the following:
Standing-unsupported
Standing-supported
Kneeling-unsupported
Kneeling-supported
Prone-unsupported
sitting also too
There is baracade shooting, etc.

Generally anything past 100 yards is bi-pod territory.

A 10/22 will work supper.

Depends on how cheap a scope you are looking at but here are 3 that are proven under $100 with Mil-Dots, target knobs, and a reliable zero.

Tasco, Target-Varmint 2.5-10x40, cost approx $65
Tasco, Target-Varmint 6-24x40, cost approx $80
Center Point at Wall-Mart, 4-16x40, cost approx $70

The semi-auto rifles are in a class and everything else are in another.  The reason the semi shooters don't have to break position where the manual actions  have to move some to reload.

Update.

There will be an optional side match at 300 yards in 2010.
the steel target is 15Wx25L or so.
10 shots scored.

for the bi-pod part of the comp the targets generally will not be any smaller than than this...
100 yards 4Wx6H
200 yards 6wx10H
the 250 yard is 9Wx15H
(zona and I accidently pounded the 9x15 target in at 265 yards once, sorry about that. Be sure to check distance yourself if you can)  Grin

the alternate positions targets are generally less than 100 yards and are bigger than the bi-pod stuff.

Had some berm work done out at Parma today, which is super cool.  A D8 Cat makes things happen quick.  Thanks TN!
If you miss a berm now (berms 11 and 12), y'all need to practice more.

You don't want that nasty ol rifle Travis . Jim fired 5 rounds at one spot and only one bullet hole appeared . He said it was 5 all in the same hole but I think he hit once and missed 4 times . I got a nice single shot bolt gun I will trade you for , I will even throw in the hammer .

Update.

There will be some stages that require a magazine change.
Be sure to bring at least 2 mags if you have a mag fed rifle

If you have a single shot not issues.  If you have a tube fed, you will have to load 5, shoot, then reload 5 in the tube.

What kind of rifle you shooting, that you can't find extra mags?

For one-mag'ers.
Shoot half the rounds for the stage, take mag out, put it in a yet to be determined place, completely let go, grab and re-load.

Remington has no extra mags?  That sucjs

So it looks like you will have to stuff 5 more rounds in the mag in addition to taking it out.  You don't have to put it down though Smiley

Still come on out and give it a go.  There won't be more than 2 stages that require a manditory reload, generally.

I plan the Course of Fire so single shots can be competitive.

I am interested in giving this a try if I can get out to Parma on one of the match days.  Will the distance for each stage be a known distance or will it be the shooters responsibility to determine range?  Just wondering if I will need a rangefinder of some sort (if allowed).  Thanks.

approximate distances are given in the stage disctiptions, plus or minus a couple yards generally.
range finding is allowed, so bring a laser or whatever, if you want.
Target sizes are given also if you want to mil them.

FYI,
The June match will be sorta sniper-y.

I'm working on several loop-hole stages.

Come on out, these are rifleman's matches.

[show hand]  I think I'll be there.

Come on out.
This will be the last static match(all shots fired from the same spot per stage).
The August match will have lots of movement.
I couldn't work it in for July.

The calendar shows the match starts at 1:00 but because of the heat we will start the next shoot at 9:00 AM.
The distances are 40 meters, 60m, 77m and 100m.
Cost is $3.00
Hope to see you there Wink
