Apocalypse Man
« on: January 06, 2010, 02:50:33 PM »
New show slated to air at 7:00pm tonight on History Channel. Trailer looked pretty good, host running around demonstrating survival techniques. I've got the DVR set to record it.

What channel?  I googled it and got some web site that attacked my system.
Q: What was the most positive result of the "Cash for Clunkers" program?
A: It took 95% of the Obama bumper stickers off the road.

Government authorities say it's "not if... but when"...a moment in the future when, just as it has in the past, some catastrophe sparks mass destruction, leaving humans challenged to find shelter, heat, food, water and defense. If that happens, would you know what to do? Survival expert Rudy Reyes journeys through abandoned buildings showing us some surprising survival techniques, including making fire from steel wool, finding safe houses and creating shortwave radio transmissions.

It's on again at 11pm as well. My dvr is set. I am going to miss the internet one day, second to plumbing, and a fridge, and heat, and electricity and on and on.  ;)

Pretty hard to prep for that, and only so much can be done with your diet. Wonder if you can freeze a supply? It's that or figure out how to extract it from horse or pig blood yourself. Good luck.

There's a way you can make it.  I think.  You need sheep though.  I remember reading about it somewhere.

Interesting show.  Some things were a little unrealistic I think.  That was not a tire iron.  Every diesel engine I've worked on that ran out of fuel was a absolute bear to get restarted.  I think the average person would run into a brick wall on that one, but it is useful to know that the possibility is there.  I did learn a few tricks though so it was worth the watch.

So does anyone know if this going to be a series or just one show?

You can always form a community. We'll just have to watch out for the roving bands of Diabetic Zombies.

I watched it last night after i got home form work. It ws pretty good. Given the choice, which we have here, I would rather run for the hills. However, it was still informative. Good catch fj40mojo

Doubt you could get enough sugar in there to do the job, better to give them what they need an injection of insulin that is if you've got it. Can you say NETWORKING TOOL.

As for the show I thought the draw bridge crossing was far fetched and as for starting a diesel after it runs the tank dry he completely neglected to mention that you've got to crack all the fuel injector lines loose and turn the beast over until you bleed all the air out of the lines before you can even begin to think about starting it. Not as easy as he made it look and would likely take a bunch more battery power than you would have available. I thought it was great that he mentioned OPSEC/PERSEC, and moving in concealed routes but ruined the whole thing by building a transmitter at the end and announcing to a hostile world his location and destination.

Positives, nicely concealed fire among other things. I didn't delete it from the DVR.

To be fair with respect to the transmitter, he did go into a decent explanation of how to avoid trouble by showing up a day early and observing the area and who shows up.  Then you could withdraw from the area if things look a little dicey.  Personally, I don't think I would broadcast my name or that I was alone.  I think meeting up with other people could be important for sanity and greater effectiveness in defense and foraging, but I'd definitely be careful about it.

Agreed, my problem with it is if you are broadcasting to the horizon who's to say that the recipient isn't already closer to your destination than you are and won't set an ambush for you. Snoopin and poopin goes both ways. I think I'd rather make initial contact by chance than anounce my arrival to the entire world and I'm sure as heck not gonna give away my force strength, may as well draw a target on yourself. I think travel under cover of darkness would be a good idea too. It's nice to hold up at night and find shelter but you are exposing yourself to observation by potential unfriendlies even when traveling alternate routes like RR.

Think about someone listening.  They won't believe there is only one person and they'll be trying to get there early too.

I'd think the thing to do is broadcast from the location you are at now.  After you have a hide.  And a couple of escape routes.

True.  Get your hide and escape routes, then set the meet-up for someplace you can observe from there.

Maybe the best thing about the show is it gets us thinking about how to do things better.

I caught this last night... it wasn't so good.  The mindset was in the right place, but it was woefully short on anything actually approaching content.

I also caught "After Armageddon."  This show was probably the most comprehensive, well thought out piece of material I've seen in a long time.  It touched on a lot of the topics that would contribute to a SHTF scenario.  http://www.history.com/shows.do?episodeId=524638&action=detail  Set your DVR or maybe look for it from a third party source.

I watched "After Armageddon" as well. It was painful to watch the main guy and his family make stupid mistakes, but I know they put those in to show what not to do. I'm sure I'd make some dumb mistakes myself if I ended up in a similar situation. You never really know what to expect. Overall I thought it was pretty good. It's was a good reminder to always work on being more and more prepared. I had my wife DVR it.

I've only caught a part of Apocalypse Man. The part I saw was interesting.
