I think a big wall tent would be awesome once a new 'home' is made/found and as long as you had a good way to transport it (truck).  Since I dont have a big wall my 3+ season 2 man tent will work for everything except holding the weight of fresh 18" of snow.  It's light (4lbs, 4oz...even though there is lighter models available now days) and packs down well inside my pack.

always nice to have choices...

BOB requires light weight....so we have picked up some real light nice 3 season tents from REI when they had them on clearance....I'll have to make due, because they are last years colors....

Next we have some average tents which are more suitable for carrying in a truck...heavier duty and weight more.

Now if we have the luxuery of moving in a truck and towing a trailer we would use a wall tent with stove.

But for BOB....light weight.

We have a 4 man tent, but in all reality, I am planning on having to construct a natural shelter. It's not all that hard if you've practiced a few times. A shelter big enough for four people only takes 15 to 30 min depending on the availability of resource. Here in Idaho there are endless ways to build one. The best part is that you can burn your bedding/ground insulation, pine boughs, every couple of days. Not to mention the shelter will smell all christmassy ;D. The mountains here literally give a person everything one needs to survive if a person doesn't mind a little bit of work and thinking.

I've used several sizes and types deer and elk hunting over the last too many years. Backpack, horseback and truck camping. One thing above all unless you just plan to stay out 1 or 2 nights in GOOD weather is to have a true 4 season tent. After you get up 10 times in the night to shake the snow off just to get the tent off of you to keep from suffocating and get no sleep and are frozen and all your stuff is wet..........or the wind blows 40 for days on end........and 3 of the fiberglas poles are broken from the snow weight........and you do it 2 years in a row.........don't ask.
Temporary shelter is one thing but there is no substitute for four season.
The big drawback is they are heavier. Take a friend along and make them pack it. ::)
I have a cabellas alaskan guide tent now and they do well in high wind and wet heavy snow with the aluminum poles. Aluminum is stronger and lighter than the fiberglass. Who knows about lightning.

+1
I've done some camping with thing sort of set up. You'd be amazed at how well you can do, just make sure to know your knots and try it out quite a bit before it starts raining. Also make sure if you have the pricier tarps that you water proof the seams. nice and light weight!

A tarp and some para cord

When in the military (Light Infantry) I used a setup called an Aussie hootch. It was a rubberized nylon tarp with grommet-ted edges, a single grommet in the center that allowed you to form a peak so rain would run off, and roughly the same size as a GI poncho. I added 6 camo bungees and a recycled SAW ammo bag similar to the cotton ammo bandoleers that come with stripper clips. The entire setup (guessing) weighed around a pound was fairly compact and totally waterproof. It could be set up close to the ground for tactical reasons and camouflaged with available vegetation if needed. Alas, somewhere over the years I decided it was no longer essential and let it go. Wish I had it back. It would make a great addition to my BOB.

My GHB shelter is a bivy. Our main plan is to shelter in place but if we had to bug out (by vehicle)  we'd throw in the family tent just to have it. If we have to hump to our BOL it'd would be bivies for my son and me and a 4 season tent for the girls.

Found this, the one I used in the Army was OD green not jelly bean camo but they are still in use and available. Of course you loose the flexibility of being able to wear it as a poncho but I never found this to be a very productive way of staying dry, generally anywhere you touch the PU coated nylon the moisture wicks through. Combine one of these with the Alph tent idea  and you've got yourself a really light, fast erecting, compact shelter for your BOB or hunting pack.

I have a 2-man Kelty backpacking tent, 5 pounds. However if weight were not an issue my cabelas alaknak tent is great. Its put up with a lot of high winds without issue, snowfall & heavy rain. The only leak in 4 years has been from a hole from a burning ember coming out of my stove.
