CRT-15 carbon removal tool
« on: December 16, 2009, 11:36:10 AM »
Has anyone used one of these tools?  I have spent a good amount of time getting the carbon off of the curved portion of the bolt using less than efficient methods and this seems like it would work really well.

I've never used that one. I think mine was made by DPMS, not sure, it has no markings and it's been awhile.

There is an excellent read about carbon scrapers on  Lightfighter.net. You'll probably have to join to read the link.

It's been awhile since I've read it so I'm not sure whats been added. But the general consensus was that unless your military and have to turn the rifle back into an armory that requires it to be spotless, don't use a carbon scraper. Most posters felt that it just wears out the coating on the rilfes. Which leads to the wearing out of the metal eventually.

Interesting.  I have read information in the past about a test done where a guy didn't clean his AR at all to see how long until it failed to operate properly.  He was well over 10000 rounds and counting when I read it so it would lend credence to the posts you mention.  I just figured it was similar to a valve in a car engine.  If carbon is keeping it from seating fully flush, it would cause some kind of misalignment between the bolt and carrier or create gaps allowing more gas and grime back into the receiver.

That was always my take on it to. I've always been the kind of shooter to where if I clean my rifle, I want it spotless. On the other it only makes sense that if you scrape a portion of your rifle with a metal object you'll eventually introduce wear in that area.

Anyway, I believe I'm guilty of high jacking your thread a bit. Sorry about that.

Nope, sorry.

I'm one of the guys that doesn't scrape.  Occasionally I'll use a chemical on the carbon.  Usually brake cleaner.  ;)

Spiff, no worries.  If scraping and cleaning to that degree isn't necessary or is detrimental to the parts, I'd just as soon have it in the thread so others can benefit from the info.
