2010 MGM New Years Day Man on Man 3 gun
« on: December 06, 2009, 07:22:45 PM »
Sorry I didn't post this before now, but I had totally forgotten and just got reminded about it today!!!  Here is the post from last year that pretty much sums up the match.  Parma Rod and Gun Club....09:00 New Years Day...dress warm.
To all of you 3 gunners out there, I/MGM will be putting on a man on man 3 gun on new years day again this year.  We did it last year for the first time, and I think everyone had a pretty good time.
Here is the way it works:
There will be two identical stages set up side by side.  There will be two shooters on the line and on the go signal, each shooter will engage his or her course of fire.  The last target to be shot is a cross over stop plate.  Basically what this is, is two steel plates on an angle and whoever shoots their target first will fall down and be the winner.  It will be the best two out of three runs and a double elimination tournament so if you loose the first go round, you are not finished.
We will divide the shooters up into three groups.  Beginner, intermediate, and expert.  You will only be shooting against shooters in your class unless you win, and then at the end we will have a shoot off between the winners of all three classes for a grand finale!
We will base the number of targets you have to shoot on what sort of gun you are shooting.  The issue we usually have is guys with iron sights vs scopes.  The guys with scopes usually have to shoot one additional target to make it fair.
This year, there will be rifle targets at 100y, a plate rack for the pistol and SG.  The entry fee will be $10 and we will pay back all of the entry fees to the top 33% of shooters in each class, or as close as I can get without a calculator  .
I really want this to be a lot of fun for everyone, and new 3 gunners and even new shooters are welcome and encouraged to come.
Sometimes my thoughts are a little disjointed so if you have any questions, just post them here or send me an e mail and I'll do my best to get them answered ASAP!
Adios,
TG

Sounds like fun. I have never done a 3 gun match before. What kind of equipment do I need to round up? How many and what kind of shot gun shells?
Thanks.

Tons o' fun, mainly just make sure your guns run, probably just like today, 100 of each and you'll be fine,
for the 12 g 6-7 shot works depending on what the fiendish boys at MGM throw at us. Last year plates rack were at about ten yards. Accuracy and attention won the day.

This is going to be a shooting match...not a shotgun loading match, or a foot race, or an accuracy match.  What I mean by that is you won't have to load your sg (unless you miss), you won't have to run from one spot to another, and the pistol and sg targets will be relatively close.
There will be two plate racks for each shooter at about 10 yards.  One for shotgun, one for pistol.  There will be five or six rifle targets at 100 yards.
Bulk shotgun ammo from Wallyworld will work just fine.  No buck, no slugs.  Guy who can keep his gear running and SHOOTS the best will win.

Yea, but if you shoot a pump and he shoots a semi auto, you'll only have to knock down five plates on the plate rack instead of six...see!!  There is still hope!!  :rofl2:

Ya I've been bitten a couple of times myself. Have you ever shot iwaca's WWII battle rifle match? It is a serious hoot. I think it is in or around August. 2 classes bolt and semi. I was so enamored with one of the guys K31 swiss thet I went out and bought one. Straight pull bolt and a real thumper.

Ok so here goes the dumb question for the day. If I can make it I would like to know what to bring.

Here are my options , will they work.

CD 12gauge pump 18in barrel.
AR15 .223 with 16in barrel
Glock 23 and/or if I still have it then and XDm 9mm.

So let the newbie have it. Also how much ammo for each pistol/rifle/shotgun?

hundred of each, shoot the XDm, get some 7, 7.5 shot for the CD, also get a small can of light spray lube for your guns, trust me, it helps cause of the cold, just a little insurance. The biggest thing is shooting your own game, NOT paying any attention to anything except your own targets. ;)

I'm just out there to have fun!!  The whole reason we started this match was to get some trigger time and grow the sport!!  We love new shooters and discouraging them from coming because they are going to get their a$$ handed to them isn't my intent.
I would love to have 10 new shooters come out and let me coach them all day!  I wouldn't even shoot the match if I had the chance to do that!!!

I am looking forward to this match. It sounded like fun and then I saw the videos from last year and it looks awesome. I think it's going to be great time.

Adios,
TG

Tg they really aren't discouraging me at all. I am thick skinned and plan on doing my own ass whooping. Pops just likes to give me shit cuz he knows I can handle it. It's all good sir.

And I look forward to any shooting tips you have :)

It will probably be a combination of 10" Flash targets, 6" Colt Speed plate auto Poppers, and Standard Auto Poppers which are a 1/3 sized Pepper Popper...14" tall with a 4" dia circle.  Other than that, I don't know.

This looks like a lot of fun, except for that 8:30 thing...  :-\

I've got a pistol, a hunting mossberg 500 & a bolt action .222 - is it even worth trying to be competetive with this equipment?  I'm not real fast, but I like to shoot.

Thanks!

Dan,
Sorry for the delay in getting back with you.  Here is the short answer   YES!!!!  If you come out with that gear, we'll give you a handicap so you can compete.  Not sure if a bolt gun would be a disadvantage as most guys burn up a ton of ammo trying to hit the plates!!!
Basically what we are going to do is only make you shoot five of the six rifle plates.  If your shotgun is a pump and only holds five rounds, we are only going to make you shoot five plates, and your competition will have to shoot six if he/she is shooting a semi auto.  We are going to break it up into beginner, intermediate, and expert, so you will be shooting against shooters with about the same skills.  This is a good time.  Let me know if you have any questions.

their is the possiblity if you bring some 223 you could borrow a ar15 and be slightly more competive   really the only thing slowing you dow is the loading the bolt gun that is if its like last year empty gun on the table start

Nope.  No loading on the clock...unless you miss with your shotgun. I'll explain all of rules at the match, but here is the abreviated version.  Rifle starts hot on safe...as many rounds as it will hold.  Pistol starts hot...11 rounds MAX in gun at any time (bring lots of magazines if you plan on missing a lot so we don't have to wait for you to load them between strings....or bring someone to load them for you between strings).  Shotgun will be hot on safe with a MAX of 7 rounds in the gun (if yours won't hold this much, we'll make sure your competitor has the same ammount as you).  If you miss too much to finish the plate rack, you have to load the rounds one at a time to finish...i.e. load one shoot one, load one shoot one..etc.  Should be fun and force everyone to shoot a little more accurately instead of just fast.

I just remembered that I didn't RSVP - count me in! Thanks to Mopeman for the AR offer, I already have the .222 ammo for my rifle so I'll just see how I do with that.

Also, I have a bunch of federal target 8 shot shotgun ammo - Travis you mentioned 6 or 7 shot.  will my 8 work or should I grab some bigger stuff?

Thanks & see you on Friday!

I heard that too  :-\  We might have to brake out some light plants so we can shoot at night after it cools down a bit...........notice there were no "sarcasm on/sarcasm off" icons there.

just wouldn't be right for it to not be miserable cold. OK, we can wait til the sun goes down or I'll bring a chest of ice and water. On deck shooter has to stick both hands in for 3 min before the buzzer...

It was crazy out there.  Way more people than I thought there would be.  It did look like people were having fun shooting and huddling around the burn barrel.

I had a great time. It was cold and wet and so much fun. I didn't know that I could have that much fun while kneeling in 3" of slushy muddy water.
Many thanks to Mike and Travis. You guys put on a great match.

I was the one with the bolt gun.

Thanks to Travis & MGM for the great time!  It was good to meet some of you guys on here, I know I spoke to RGinIdaho, Travis, Popsgunner, Jordon, and a few others that are escaping me at the moment - for example I've forgotten Jason's screen name...

Anyway, it was a hoot, I'm gonna have to get me a semi-auto rifle for next time!

For the guys that scored the brass from the left station - remember that the ones with the funny longer necks are .222 not .223.  They'll probably shoot though, you'll just have a 222 stamped 223 shell then. :)

Popsgunner, I'll get that Taurus to you sometime when I get a minute.  Thanks for looking at it!

I had a blast out there today ;D  I could not have spent my 13th anniversary to my hubby any better than this it was cold, wet and muddy yes but it was a great adrenaline rush for me to actually beat someone and to go 3 brackets before getting booted.. I will definently do this again next year!  But now I need to buy my husband a red dot for his gun... So he can keep up

Thanks to Travis and Mike for putting on a great shoot and to everyone else who helped them out also.. I hope everyone had a good day starting the new years with a bang!

Thank you very much for the offer but I need to literally learn how to shoot it not just improve my shooting skills. This is my first semi auto shotgun and I thought it would be a good idea to pick it up Thursday night and bring it to the match Friday morning without ever really even looking at it little alone trying to shoot it, and this proved to be a bad idea.

It was a pleasure meeting you and Mr. mopeman hope to see you at another shoot soon.

Dan

No they wont. I some how got a .222 in one of my mags right about the middle. The best part was one of my buddys was shooting. so he handed the gun back after it didnt go bang and I start looking at it and it was a stamped .222 not one we made out of .223. but because of the longer neck it seats in the chamber farther and the ejector wont grab it.  I pulled the upper and the BCG and smacked the back against my hand and it came out.

And do you guys do any more of these shoots sometime in the summer. I work at a body shop and all this white stuff made people forget how to drive and I didnt have the time to come up for it. But it looks like a blast.

Rockin' pics Zona!!  Well done as usual!
First of all, thanks to everyone for the kind words.  I'm really glad everyone had a good time and am happy I was able to do it and that MGM had the hardware available to make it happen.  I was really excited to see all of the Boise Shooters members out there as well as all of the first time shooters.  What a great turn out!
Zona and I were talking, and if we can schedule it, we are going to try and do another one this spring.  I just had a thought that maybe we could schedule it the day before the Glock match or something like that....don't know....just thinking out loud.
Anyway, next time we do this, we WILL have two separate courses of fire so we can run the beginners on one course and the intermediates and experts on another.  This will really cut down on the length of the match.  It was a lot of fun to have all of the people out there and getting to visit (well a little bit anyway), but at about 14:00 I was ready to get the heck out of there!!!
Here are the top couple of shooters in each class:
Beginner:
1st Tony (sorry Tony I can't remember your last name)
2nd Evans K
We paid out $200 down to 6th place in this class.
Intermediate:
1st: Cody S (carharttfarmer)
2nd: Mike W
Paid out $80 in this class.
Expert:
1st Travis G
2nd Mike G
Paid out $80 in this class as well.
If you have any suggestions as to what would make this better, I'd be happy to hear them.  Thanks again, and we'll see you at the next one.
Adios,
TG
PS  If you enjoyed this, you should come out and shoot one of the weekly pistol matches with us at either Nampa, Parma, or Emmett.  They are this much fun too!  There is an IDPA match in Nampa next Saturday!!

Travis,

How about doing a 3gun match on the 5th weekend of the month, when there is a 5th weekend. I'd prefer Saturday, but whatever.

Just at thought, I'd like to do 3gun, but regular matchs are hard to find.

I'll have to check my calender, but I might be up for that.  The problem I had last time I tried to do this was lack of participation.  I'd go out and set up a stage or two and I'd have two people shoot it.
Looks like there are at least four, five weekend months this year if you include the Sundays.  If I could get a committment for some help, I'd be up to give it a try.  They wouldn't be too fancy, but you would get to shoot all three guns.
Any takers???
