165gr SST hunting bullets
« on: November 02, 2009, 07:46:15 PM »
Choice between interlock and the interbond, is it cost prohibitive to buy the
interbond......
Up coming hunt with a family member in very open country thinking of trying
some of these for a 308 Win that they are shooting.......
Looked at the BC on the 180gr to the 165gr and not as much difference out to 500
or so yards.....
Any thoughts or have you used any of these........

I loaded about 100 rounds of the 165gr interlock SST's for my buddy's 30-06 this summer.  I got a text from him yesterday about his mule deer he harvested with that ammo.  He said the range was about 325 yards and the bullet went through the deer with not much meat damage.  The deer was slightly quartered away from him.  The bullet went through the hart and the deer dropped where he stood.  The bullet wasn't recovered unfortunately.  I wanted to see what it looked like after the fact and get an idea of the expansion and weight retention.  Of course the key to any good kill is shot placement more than bullet type.  I could try to get you some more info on the wound channel if you like.  I can send you the load data also if you want it.
When the last deer disappears into the morning mist,
When the last elk vanishes from the hills,
When the last buffalo falls on the plains,
I will hunt mice, for I am a hunter,
And I must have my freedom.

I can vouch for the destructive power of the SST. Witnessed a shot from .308 just a week ago on a 4x3 Mulie at 100yds approximately. Near side shoulder destroyed, lungs converted to soup, bullet recovered rolled up just under the hide on the far side, retained 65% of original weight I believe. Deer went about 15 yards and finito! Pretty impressive at half the price of the Interbond. Far as I can tell the only real difference seems to be that the SST uses the cannelure to lock the core into the jacket where the Interbond actually has a special jacket with a thicker forward section that locks the core in. BC is identical, same polymer tip. I'd give the SST the nod. You may get a tiny bit more accuracy out of the Interbond, but if the shot is properly place the deer aint gonna know the difference between the 2.
