Chuckar help
« on: October 27, 2009, 08:17:27 PM »
I was asked to go hunting Chuckars in the Owyhees next weekend with a freind. I have never hunted these birds, but im told they are like a small chicken. Can someone enlighten me a bit so I dont look like a complete moron when we go out? I plan on using a 12 guage, and im guessing game load, but do i want standard 8 ball or should i try to get a few boxes of 6? Should 2 boxes of ammo be enough(50 rounds) Im a pretty good shot with skeet and dove..any strategies with these birds? Also, I have a standard hunting lisence atm, I just need a bird stamp right?

Check the link for a picture of your nemesis. Be prepared to trudge up and down super steep endless open sagebrush hills. Birds like to run to the top of the hill just ahead of you and just before you get to where you think you're in range they'll fly over your head at something akin to an F16 pace tearing down the hill below you opening the distance faster than you can cycle your gun. Tip, and this is strictly hearsay, if you are hunting over a dog tie a helium balloon to the dogs collar and send the dog up the hill after the birds. Birds think the balloon is a hunter and follow their usual MO. When they bust off the top of the hill you can ambush them at the bottom. Saves a bunch of puffin and pantin on your part.

Have hunted chucker without a dog but having one is smart.
usually find near rocky areas and water in the mornings, sunning on
the rocks mornings, try not to shoot over three at one jump you will loose
generally more because not sure where yu hit birds landed...
General I shoot two and watch where they land as well as the jumped birds landed.
Eating is in my opinion the best eating bird ............7.5 and 6's use the 6s last 7.5
because at close range you will have meat scraps... 1 1/8 of 7.5 works good
if the birds aren't jumpy ic choke to 30 yds and mod after that to 50 and full as a last choice..
close shots with a full choke and you have a mess.......feathers and meat one mess...
 Best of luck and enjoy........

I've heard it said (and I concur), "The first time you hunt chukar for fun.  From then on, revenge."
