AR-15 Handguard
« on: October 15, 2009, 04:45:10 PM »
I'm looking at replacing the stock plastic handguard on my colt 6920 carbine with 10" or 11" from Larue or Daniel Defense, which also means I'd have to remove the front sight base and install a low profile gas block, I believe.  I know that given the right tools, knowledge, and time that the installation of these rails can be relatively simple.  That being said I think I'd rather have someone more competent than myself install it for me.

Can someone recommend a gunsmith who is competent in ARs, can do it in a reasonable amount of time, and can do it for a reasonable price?  It'd be more convenient for him to be in Boise, but that's not a necessity.

Thanks!

The hardest part, will be that you have to buy the tools for what could be a 1 time job. That said, You may borrow mine if you feel like giving it a try. Or you can find a smith..nothing like doing it your self and knowing your platform though. RK, looks like knows his shit. He's in Nampa and a forum vendor.

I recommend a Daniel defense...really lightweight in comparison to a lot of platforms.

Oh and if you go with a Daniel defense you can get a FSB model and not have to get a low pro gas block...in addition make sure (if you have a muzzle device) to order a new crush washer while you are at it..you will need it when you reinstall your muzzle device.

I have a Daniel Defense Omega FSB (new; take off from a DDM4) I'll sell you.  I can put it on for you too.

Looks like the sell for about $350.  I'll sell mine for $275.

i replaced my handguard set up for the first time 6 months ago its not that hard just read a bit and go slowly, however if you want to have a gunsmith do it i think you should go to RK he is out by karcher mall and is very handy with AR's.

So I just got an AR with 16 in barrell, the question is, is the handguard seems too big for the barrell.  What size handguard do I need and is there anything else I need to do with the sight?  Sorry this is a newbie question?

I say RK too, but he has moved and is off of garrity and kings road. RK is a great guy and does a great job.

Also I have Knights arm handguards and love them. Oh and sometimes you can remove one of the parts on the inside of the handguard so you don't have to remove all the other stuff you talked about. I would name off the parts I am talking about but have no idea what the tech terms are because I am a newbie myself ;D
