The wife drew first blood with her new rifle that I got her for Christmas last year. Yearling doe, offhand in the head at 'bout 75 yards. Somebody had wounded it earlier, gut shot, in the morning so it wasn't going anywhere in a hurry. Spotted it bedded, magpies were already on her trying to eat her alive. Good stalk and the wife made a great shot. She felt bad about shooting such a young deer, but I told her somebody had to finish it off or it was gonna suffer. Probably wouldn't have lasted thru the night. I'm headed back out for the evening hunt soon as I get all the blood off my camos. ;D

Tell the wife she did good.

Get the blood off of your camo's? I suppose you are going to take a shower too? ;D

No shower, took a little nap. Didn't get home from work until 0230 this am and then got up at 0430 to head out so that took precedence over smellin good. Camo is in the drier now, 30 minutes and I'm gone, back to the spot where I killed my buck last year on opening day. :sniper1:

Congrats.

I had double opening day success.  Cow elk on the 5th, doe on the 10th.  I guess I'm a tourist for the rest of the month.

Tourist here too.  Out of bed at 07:15.  First buck down by 08:10.  Cleaned and in the truck by 08:40.  Second buck down, cleaned, and in the truck by 09:30.   Two forked horns.  Not huge, but not bad for the first time out in 23yrs!!  ;D

Sure is funny that anyone I go hunting with always seems to say "I don't know what is going on, usually we see some deer/elk around here" while I'm there, as soon as I have to go home they'll all tag out... >:(
You know what I think?  It don't really matter what I think.

and I had a whitetail tag, I would have gotten a doe if I saw one.  Walked way too much today and yesterday.

Just a hint OB.....I hunted whitetails for a couple of years before I figured out your better to sit than to have "walked way too much". Whitetails are a way different critter from mule deer.  A lot spookier. Try a ground stand. You don't have to own a blind or even wear camo. Just find a place that looks like there is a lot of deer traffic and a spot that you can sit and watch it from, be conscious of predominant wind and your scent, sit with your back to a tree, sit still or make a little blind out of available foliage-just enough to break up your outline and conceal movement, and wait it out. Look for scrape lines as these are areas that bucks frequent and they tend to place there scrape lines in areas that does pass through, so you are likely to see either sex in those areas. Take a couple of shed horns with you, it's still early for rattling, but I've had bucks that spooked and came back in when I rattled. Invest in some scents, they are expensive but effective. A little piece of felt on a boot lace dipped in some estrus doe urine and safety pinned to your pant leg so that it drags on the ground behind you is very effective-just remember to walk through your ambush site and double back to your ground stand. I've never invested in a grunt call but simply making a "baaa" like a sheep can be an effective way to stop a buck long enough for a shot. Good luck! Where you hunting at?

No success here at all - see this thread:  http://www.boiseshooters.com/index.php/topic,7450.msg45468.html#new

I'd sure like a whitetail or a muley.  Anyone wanna share where they've been successful this year???  I hear the whitetail are plentiful up North, but don't know where to find them around here.  That would actually be pretty cool to get one of those.

Anyway, I need to fill that darn freezer up this year AND get my son his first deer, ever.  So any tips you are willing to share would be appreciated.  If you prefer, PM me.

Thanks, guys.

MarkinIdaho,

I didn't get around to hunting this year...as I am a new resident. Last year as a nonresident I had luck out of Cambridge on NF 5min into Opening morning. We didn't walk more than 75 yards before two mule does walked out not 25 yards in front of us. Later that day we spotted 8-10 more bucks and does. We also saw whitetails in the lower areas on the way home.

Good luck!

Thanks for the info!  Almost went that direction this year... then was talked out of it.  As I was sitting in the snow, I was thinking to myself that maybe we should have gone that way.   ::)

I was out opening day & busted a 2x3 muley, but I held off as I was really looking for a whitetail.  saw many in the offseason in this area, but none this time..

If you have a general tag, we could do some ATVing & get a muley in 39 this weekend

markinIdaho, you are welcome too.
I can't hear you over the sound of my own awesomeness.

Luckypunk, thanks for the offer.  Unit 39 is where I hunted.  Didn't hear any good news at the check station either - some deer, but numbers are low thru the station on Hilltop.

Nomad - where are you finding Whitetail here in S. Idaho?  I didn't think they were this far South.

Thanks for the information, Nomad.  I knew you could find Whitetail in the Whitebird and Riggins areas, but didn't realize they were as far South as the Twin Falls area.  Good to know.  Still not sure at this end what we will do.  Of course, this Saturday is opening day of pheasant season... hard to miss that day.  :D

Both my sons each got a whitetail this year just out of Grangeville on the south fork of the Clearwater.  And plus one on just setting up and waiting for whitetail. Private land is best if you can hunt it.

Try the Atlanta area.  Bumpy ride, but worth the trip (usually)!

Some of you may recognize this mug shot. Took him up to same spot this morning where I shot my deer yesterday (don't ask). Lightning may not strike the same spot twice but 40 yards apart? That is how far our gut piles ended up being from each other.
