That does suck - a new engine is a lot of bucks - - -

new engine, radiator, heater (core) fixed, new keyless entry fob, spare key, so on and so on....

ballparked me $5,500+

apparently the valves were sticking, no compression, etc etc. basacally top end was hammered.  then they got to looking at the bottom end.  Tech said he hadn't pulled the pan yet but suspected that there were 2 if not 3 egged out rod caps laying in the bottom.

we'll see as i'm keeping the old engine.  i'll rebuild it and either sell it by itself or find another XJ in need of an engine and sell complete...

What do those parts have to do with an engine? You know if it were me I'd check around a bit. There are a lot of folks looking for work still and there might be a reputable shop that could certainly do that job just as well and a lot cheaper.

Q:
what has two thumbs, bought a ticking time bomb of a used vehicle and now gets to buy a new engine?

I just helped a friend with his 4.0 Jeep engine and he found a great company online to buy a complete engine from for around $1300. delivered. I'll call him tonight and get the name for you.

His Jeep started to overheat and we found this forum helpful. http://www.jeepsunlimited.com/forums/showthread.php?t=391831

the radiator and the heater core are screwed due to the pervious owner not removing their head from their ass and realizing that Mopar uses a special coolant on later vehicles (HOAT) (like GM uses DEXCOOL) and they mixed older green anti-freeze.

My dad is helping me cover the costs and he wanted to take it to dodge so that's why i didn't search around.  we did get 10% off parts and labor due to his business discount so that helps.

well, today makes a month that dodge has had my jeep.  new issues just keep popping up just as they think they are about done.

by the time i get it back, it'll include not only the new engine, but new heater core, wiring harness (or at least parts of) possibly new radiator, trans filter and flush, block heater, etc etc.

part of me wants to be upset that it's taking so long, but part of me wants it to be done right and after actually talking with the TECH (instead of the assistant SM) i think it will be done right.  he is a fellow jeep enthusiast and so is his son.  they have been rebuilding his son's XJ as well so i get the feeling he knows what to look for.  or at least i hope so anyway....

the wait continues... :(

Is your new Jeep at Sundance Dodge ?? Amazingly enough I had a very similar experience with them as your having now when my Wifes old car was giving us some grief . I think it hung out there for about a month before they pulled their head out far enough to get it rolling again .

worse actually.  if i'd have known how much the new rig was going to cost me, i'd have kept the RAM.  the whole reason i got rid of it was an attempt to lessen some of the monthly bills in preperation for upcoming plans that include marriage, and possibly a new place to live...

hasn't worked out for me so far.

live and learn and all that...

I dont trust stampede for shit.  I had a 2004 1500 with the 4.7 engine started to idle up and down in the rpms.  The service writer tried to tell me that was normal do to the engine not having a throttle cable anymore.  I told him that the 4.7 has a throttle cable and that it was the hemi that did not have throttle cables anymore.  Finally just got pissed and left.  Then the PT cruiser we had they "fixed" the AC 4 times and still could not keep the coolant from leaking out.  Then they tried to say they would not fix it anymore since the warranty was expiring.  Screw stampede.

well, it's home.  picked it up after work today.

so far so good.  all said and done, it's got a new engine, new radiator and upper hose, new heater core, new battery, new starter, some new wiring, the transmission was serviced.  the engine has a 3 year 100,000 mile warranty and 12 month warranty on everything else.

for the 31 days they had it, i was only charged just over $1,700 in labor.  doesn't seem too bad.  granted about half that time was waiting for them to get the correct engine.  they ordered the older 4.0L the first time and had to send it back.  turns out the manufacturer wouldn't send the new one till the incorrect one had arrived back at their facility back east.  so that took about 8 days.  then, the truck got delayed from the storms so that took a couple extra days.  but it's back home now and i can get started on all the little things it's going to need....

time will tell.

That is sweet and it will run just as long as a brand new vehicle.  Plus the depreciation is already out of the thing.  Yeah you had to spend a little money but in the long run better for you.  Would rather have a Jeep than the Dodge you had.  Congrats.  How much was it total to fix it?

Boy, sorry to hear about your troubles.
Especially how much money it cost

I have been fortunate to have access to the facilities to do my engine swaps.
Of course, they have still not been a walk in the park ::)

i'm still up in the air on which i'd rather have.  I LOVED my RAMs. (97 slt and then the 05 BH)  but, i'm really digging the SUV thing right now.  being able to seat 4 is nice. and having the ability to keep all my gear more secure is really nice.  and being smaller helps to get into tighter spaces etc etc...

grand total was over $7K
minus the business discount of 10%
left we with ~$6,600

not bad (not good either) considering all the other things that were fixed/replaced other then the engine.

i had the facilities, and the tools, but what i was short on was time. (or so i thought) with this being the daily driver, we were hoping to at least get it dependable enough to drive.  we didn't know just how bad the engine was till we took in.

but live and learn, it's running now and has a warranty.
