Yep, they had to work for it.  and just when they thought they had me, i walked out.  which worked in my favor as i got 3 years free oil changes and tire rotations instead of just one year.

old turck was a 97 dodge ram 1500 SLT.  8)

so i essentially bought the same truck i had, just 8 years newer...

DODGE forever!!

Looks nice but it sure is plain white  ;D   the emblems and door moldings dont have holes behind them if you ever want to take them off. And I could look it over to see if it has ever had any paint or body work done to it, if I ever make it back to pizza and can stay a while.

It the HEMI model or the 4.7?

Chevy, "like a rock"!  They sink all the way to the bottom.

Nice truck dude!  I like the Dodge 3/4 ton trucks.  They "feel" like a truck when you drive them.

When the last elk vanishes from the hills,
When the last buffalo falls on the plains,
I will hunt mice, for I am a hunter,
And I must have my freedom.

as seems to be my luck with rigs lately, my new toy is already in the shop.  haven't even owned it a week!  it has been leaking water apparently since i bought it, but i wasn't able to get it in till today.  still waiting to hear the final verdict as to what the problem is...  i'm hoping this is not a sign of how this truck is going to treat me...

a couple more gratuitous pics.  taken with the new cell phone camera which is far better then the last.

so how has she been treating you?  no, not ladyglock/khar, the Skull Wagon

by any chance is that a manual 6 or auto tranny?  I have been looking & looking for a new truck.  found one but it's a 6 speed manual.  just wondering how bulletproof they are.

the manual 6 should give me a little better DPG I think, but then it's a lot harder to "multitask"..... a story concerning "multitasking" The safety manager saw me driving down the road in my work truck, & I was eating.  so he immediately calls me up on the phone to say..."you shouldn't eat & drive, It's dangerous"  I told him HA! you shouldn't use your phone & drive, It's dangerous...I have to go now, it is dangerous to talk on the phone & eat while driving ;D

BTW: is yours lifted or just oversize tires?  hows the gas mileage? also, I was suprised to see it the one I'm looking at was a solid front axle, I figured this late of model would all be IFS is yours IFS?

I can't hear you over the sound of my own awesomeness.

hemis only come with autos in the 1500 which sucks because they would be fun as hell with a 6spd  and the 1500s have had ifs since 2002 the 2500 and 3500  still have solid axles and the 6spds are they way to go for better milage

Thanks for the info, that cuts my learning curve a bit.  so there are a few mopar guys here?  might ask a few more questions here if shortmag don't mind.  I really want to go dodge.  I was looking at a few Ford 6.0L and I thought that motor pulls like a saturn rocket but apparently they like to stretch head bolts & shit themselves

It sounds like you are leaning toward diesel...

Stay clear of the new Ford Diesel's. The 7.3 was the last decent motor. I don't know anyone that is happy with the newer Fords. Ford has always built the tougher of the big three trucks. The Duramax is quiet. I don't know anyone that is overly satisfied with the Duramax's fuel economy. Chevy sure has the ride part of their truck figured out. Their diesel truck leaves a lot to be desired. Cummins seems to be the better motor. Dodge just needs to build a truck to go with it! ;D

So let's see, Cummins diesel, 6 spd manual, in a Ford truck modified to ride like a Chevy. Oh, and a cup holder!  ;)

XDMHUMVEE or whatever will probably chime in sooner or later. They put a cummins in their Ford and thier humvee. Now that's the way to go.

Some people are like Slinkies - not really good for anything, but you can't help but smile when you see one tumble down the stairs.

snip....

after the ordeal i went through with dumbass dodge "techs" trying to replace my timing cover in the effort to fix the leak i mentioned above. which wasn't the water pump gasket either.  turned out to be a $5 thermostat housing gasket of which i told them that is where i saw the water coming from and had picture proof.  took me actually going in there and talking to the shop foreman, and service manager to get someone other then the "tech" to look at it.

long story short, gasket replaced, no cost to me other then about 4 trips to the service department, and dealing with a "tech" who i don't trust to change my oil, and will never touch my truck again.  this issue was more a fault of the service dept, then the truck itself.  the only reason i went through it all is it happened right after i bought it and should not have had to spend my own money to repair a truck that was "certified pre-owned".

any way...

the truck has not had an issue since and runs like a top.

just about to flip 63K and according to the CPU, I'm getting between 12 and 13 MPG. depending on how i drive... 8)

it is IFS as well as an Auto.

it has a FABTECH 6" lift and 35" tires, hence the mileage.  it also sports a Magnaflow cat back, Airaid CAI w/ box, and now a set of Black nerf bars.  future plans include LINE-X and some fog lights...and...and...and...

Why are they called NERF bars? ???

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nerf_bar <-- huh, I would not have guessed that.  their definition of Nerf we refered to as "checking" or "banking" in mountain bike racing. as in "I banked off that dude and left him eating dust" ;D

I call those things Rocker bars if it's a bar, or just a step.

Hey Shortmag, concerning the 35s, did you gear down?  l'm looking at a lifted 2500/Hemi on 35s and I am told it has 4.73s!  I'd rather it had the stock gearing for MPG & lose some low end grunt.  BTW no nerf bars but it really needs them due to I'm guessing 6" Eazy lift .

I'm not going for that 6speed 2500 CTD . found out it has a gooseneck hitch in the bed and cherry burns in the drivers seat >:(

I can't say for sure on that either.  the lift was installed when i bought it and i haven't crawled under it to see if it's marked w/ different gears or not.

it doesn't have that low end pull like i'd like it to.  when it shifts gears, it seems like she's kinda slow till you get wound back up again. (this is when i'm really getting on it though, "normal" driving it does just fine.)

My wife loves her '09 2500.  We need to get bigger wheels/tires on it though.  They are just 16" and look to small.  Did a straight pipe on the exhaust and put a new air filtration system in it.  It sounds cool, lol.  Got some nerf bars off of craigs list - now just need to put them on.

are you sure the said 4.73 stock is 3.73
have never heard 4.73s  4.10 and 4.56 are the normal upgrades
most people dont upgrade when they put on a lift due to the costs of a gear change lot of money if you cant do it your self

and hey mark i  have a set of toyo 35s on stock chrome alloys with 60to70% tread if your wife wants to look badass will make u a sweat deal on them

Yeah, I'm thinking it has to be the 4.56.  I am talking to the lot walker & not the mechanic.

I do have some facts that cause me to speculate about the trucks history.

facts:
Hemi on 35" tires
sitting on dealer lot as recent trade.
previous owner installed lower gearing in rear ONLY
dealer wouldn't let me test until mechanic swapped front to match.

speculation:
blew up rear end trying to mud/roost/stump pull, on 35s
threw in a repair ring & pinion to get it moving
traded in for shits & giggles
also ticking low left by exhaust manifold= exhaust leak?  not a deal killer in itself, but... :-\

I can't hear you over the sound of my own awesomeness.

to me thats scaryer than the gooseneck hitch if they were to cheap to change both sets of gears what else did they skimp on?
dont think a hemi on 35s would be good in the long run my cummins handled them fine but you would give up alot of torgue with a hemi  if you ever wanted to tow with it
but the lower gears would probable help the mpg by getting the ratio closer to what it would be with stock tires

not to go off topic, but this is a true story,

I met one of my brother in laws friends, who is very wealthy down in thousand oaks, every year he buys his wife a new Mercedes for her birthday. they live in the rich part of town where everyone has mansions, when I first met this guy, he was having marital problems and was bitching about something his wife recently did, well long story short, his wife was pissed at him, soooo, she traded in her new Mercedes for a shabby mini-van complete with the fancy wood trim car wrap. and parked it in front of their mansion so everyone in the neighborhood would see her driving it.

new engine, radiator, heater (core) fixed, new keyless entry fob, spare key, so on and so on....

ballparked me $5,500+

apparently the valves were sticking, no compression, etc etc. basacally top end was hammered.  then they got to looking at the bottom end.  Tech said he hadn't pulled the pan yet but suspected that there were 2 if not 3 egged out rod caps laying in the bottom.

we'll see as i'm keeping the old engine.  i'll rebuild it and either sell it by itself or find another XJ in need of an engine and sell complete...

What do those parts have to do with an engine? You know if it were me I'd check around a bit. There are a lot of folks looking for work still and there might be a reputable shop that could certainly do that job just as well and a lot cheaper.

I just helped a friend with his 4.0 Jeep engine and he found a great company online to buy a complete engine from for around $1300. delivered. I'll call him tonight and get the name for you.

His Jeep started to overheat and we found this forum helpful. http://www.jeepsunlimited.com/forums/showthread.php?t=391831

the radiator and the heater core are screwed due to the pervious owner not removing their head from their ass and realizing that Mopar uses a special coolant on later vehicles (HOAT) (like GM uses DEXCOOL) and they mixed older green anti-freeze.

My dad is helping me cover the costs and he wanted to take it to dodge so that's why i didn't search around.  we did get 10% off parts and labor due to his business discount so that helps.

well, today makes a month that dodge has had my jeep.  new issues just keep popping up just as they think they are about done.

by the time i get it back, it'll include not only the new engine, but new heater core, wiring harness (or at least parts of) possibly new radiator, trans filter and flush, block heater, etc etc.

part of me wants to be upset that it's taking so long, but part of me wants it to be done right and after actually talking with the TECH (instead of the assistant SM) i think it will be done right.  he is a fellow jeep enthusiast and so is his son.  they have been rebuilding his son's XJ as well so i get the feeling he knows what to look for.  or at least i hope so anyway....

the wait continues... :(

Is your new Jeep at Sundance Dodge ?? Amazingly enough I had a very similar experience with them as your having now when my Wifes old car was giving us some grief . I think it hung out there for about a month before they pulled their head out far enough to get it rolling again .

worse actually.  if i'd have known how much the new rig was going to cost me, i'd have kept the RAM.  the whole reason i got rid of it was an attempt to lessen some of the monthly bills in preperation for upcoming plans that include marriage, and possibly a new place to live...

hasn't worked out for me so far.

live and learn and all that...

bought "as is, no warranty"

also bought it from a different dealership.  just took it to dodge for the repairs.

I dont trust stampede for shit.  I had a 2004 1500 with the 4.7 engine started to idle up and down in the rpms.  The service writer tried to tell me that was normal do to the engine not having a throttle cable anymore.  I told him that the 4.7 has a throttle cable and that it was the hemi that did not have throttle cables anymore.  Finally just got pissed and left.  Then the PT cruiser we had they "fixed" the AC 4 times and still could not keep the coolant from leaking out.  Then they tried to say they would not fix it anymore since the warranty was expiring.  Screw stampede.

well, it's home.  picked it up after work today.

so far so good.  all said and done, it's got a new engine, new radiator and upper hose, new heater core, new battery, new starter, some new wiring, the transmission was serviced.  the engine has a 3 year 100,000 mile warranty and 12 month warranty on everything else.

for the 31 days they had it, i was only charged just over $1,700 in labor.  doesn't seem too bad.  granted about half that time was waiting for them to get the correct engine.  they ordered the older 4.0L the first time and had to send it back.  turns out the manufacturer wouldn't send the new one till the incorrect one had arrived back at their facility back east.  so that took about 8 days.  then, the truck got delayed from the storms so that took a couple extra days.  but it's back home now and i can get started on all the little things it's going to need....

time will tell.

That is sweet and it will run just as long as a brand new vehicle.  Plus the depreciation is already out of the thing.  Yeah you had to spend a little money but in the long run better for you.  Would rather have a Jeep than the Dodge you had.  Congrats.  How much was it total to fix it?

Boy, sorry to hear about your troubles.
Especially how much money it cost

I have been fortunate to have access to the facilities to do my engine swaps.
Of course, they have still not been a walk in the park ::)

i'm still up in the air on which i'd rather have.  I LOVED my RAMs. (97 slt and then the 05 BH)  but, i'm really digging the SUV thing right now.  being able to seat 4 is nice. and having the ability to keep all my gear more secure is really nice.  and being smaller helps to get into tighter spaces etc etc...

grand total was over $7K
minus the business discount of 10%
left we with ~$6,600

not bad (not good either) considering all the other things that were fixed/replaced other then the engine.

i had the facilities, and the tools, but what i was short on was time. (or so i thought) with this being the daily driver, we were hoping to at least get it dependable enough to drive.  we didn't know just how bad the engine was till we took in.

but live and learn, it's running now and has a warranty.
