SNOW! Enough to push deer?
« on: October 05, 2009, 07:27:28 AM »
So, this morning Bogus reported 7" of snow - opening day of rifle deer season is Saturday.  I would assume areas of similar elevation got similar amounts of snow.  What do you guys think - enough to start pushing the animals lower???  Our intended deer camp is at 7000 feet... wondering now if we shouldn't go a bit lower.

What do you guys think??

Chances are that under trees and along streams, springs, southside of mountains still
a lot of food to be found........
Boys were at 9000 ft and still lots of deer in their area this past weekend.........

No way is that enough to move them.  Enough to make them easier to track, though.  And enough to get you very wet and muddy.  :)

Well, my son and I just got back from our hunt camp and we were absolutely skunked.  Didn't see a damn thing.  My thought is that the snow was early and sudden and I think it freaked out the animals. There was about 18" on the top and 4" where we set up camp.

We found recent sign, but the deer were constantly on the move... down in elevation. We heard a few shots, all below us. We moved down, the shots moved down, lol.  When we went through Idaho City, we saw one buck and two does in the backs of trucks.  The waitress at the restaurant said most folks that came in had been skunked as well.  There was also fresh wolf sign in the area, and that probably doesn't help.  Saturday night they were howling all around us - the way they were going at it, I bet they found a gut pile.  We did see one juvenile wolf about 300 yards from us up on the top of the ridge.  He was running hard and fast.  I have a feeling he'd already been shot at.

Thinking about hitting the upper end of their winter ranges.  Also heard that the area East of Bogus has a decent population.  If anyone has some suggestions for where to go, I'd really like to hear them.  I really want my son to get his first deer!

Just as an fyi, I saw three deer crossing the road in Garden Valley last Sunday night - right in town!  A fourth had been hit on the road.  I'm not a deer hunter, but that would be the place I would go.

You can get to Holly up Harris Creek, at the summit, can't you?  Being 13, in most units he can shoot either sex.  Good reports from up there?

Drive to the base of the mountain. Start still hunting from there. You may see some does as you pass through the gravel pit, if so, there ya go. There are plenty of doe in that area, as long as the wolves have not gotten to them.
