Case vs Crate
« on: September 24, 2009, 08:13:53 PM »
What is the difference between a crate of ammo vs a case of ammo or even a battle pack?  Various websites list a case anywhere from 250 rounds to 1200 rounds for a case, and same for a crate.  Battle packs I have seen anywhere from 200 rounds to 450.  Is there a set ammo count for each of these or is it just whatever the manufacture decides is a case...well, is a case?  Thanks for the help.

Ok I am sure someone will say this is wrong, but I believe a case and crate are the same. Just different words. A battle pack ??? I have no freakin idea.

a battle pack is generally a sealed pack in a qty less that a case. A case would hold multiple battle packs. For example, South African manufactured .308 battle pack would be 140 rounds in a sealed plastic bag. When you break the seal and open it you will find 7 cardboard boxes each holding 20 individual rounds.

When I hear the word "crate" I think of pallets. So if I had to take a stab at this I'd say that a crate contains multiple cases. And a case contains multiple battle packs.

It's probably all semantics though.

Marketing gargon more likely, though I've found multiple instances where there are two or more cans in a crate than in a case. Some dealers may be distinguishing packing material so that wood=crate and cardboard=case.
All data is flawed, some just less so.

Okay, a friend was asking...he said he heard that a gun store was selling AK ammo at $500 per crate...and was asking if it was a good deal.  I told him to find out what the actual count was and go from there.

They were probably referring to what most people would refer to as a case but it's in a wooden box so the called it a crate.

Maybe.

Generally,

a "case" is 1000 rounds. A crate is 5000 rounds. Thats the normally accepted terms in the gun biz.
