NC Star Optic
« on: September 18, 2009, 08:52:34 AM »
Hey folks, I just purchased an NC Star 3-9x optic for my AR.  My buddy had one on his, which seemingly functioned very well.  I just bought this one for 70.00 and have yet to use it.  My only fear is that this company sells its wares for fairly cheap.  I guess worst case would be that I just flushed 70.00 down the tubes.  There's a group of fellows at the Ft. Boise Gun Shows that sell all NC Star products.  They too said they have had no problems with them.  Have any of you folks used any NC Star products?  If so, was the experirence good or bad?  Thanks for the input.

Well you get what you pay for.  I have heard of problems with keeping a zero on an AR.  But if he has had no problems with it.   ???  I use Sightmark.  Cant afford anything else.

For me the glass in the NC Star scopes is not clear enough for any long distance work and for $70.00 you can buy a cheep red dot that would work better for the close stuff.
That being said you own the NC Star and I would mount it if you have the proper mount but I would not spend the money for a specialty AR scope mount to mount that scope.
I have a few different scope/mount combination's for the AR flat top receiver you can try, just shoot me a PM and we can find something that will fit your budget and shooting style.

I appreciate the feedback.  J Mack- when you type of different mounting systems, what exactly are you referring to?  I have the optic on rings, but am I missing something better?  (I'm still failry new to guns, I have been shooting since I was a little boy, but was never interested in the engineering/details of shootinig until very recently). Can someone enlighten me to what the "Trade" number means under our handles on the left side of the screen?  Thanks.

I'll let JMack address your mounting concerns. As for the "Trades" question, check out the Swap Meet AO and think barter system. That should put things in context.

NCStar's are "OK" for Airsoft, but on an AR, I wouldn't recommend them...
America is at an awkward stage, it's too late to work within the system, and to early to shoot the bastards.

Ar’s require an extra tall cantilever mount to get proper eye relief and as far as I know these mounts are unique to this weapon and if you try other options you will end up here eventually.

If you have a carry handle you will also need a unique mount for the AR that mounts the scope too high to be of much use IMHO.

Red dots are another can of worms for another day as well as co-witness with your BUIS.

I like the looks of the Mark II Tactical Series.  I'd like to get my hands on one and see just how crappy it is.  ;)

I dont know J mack I used that set up with the carry handle mount with a red dot and loved it.  I like the reflex with no handle and BUIS now.

In my opinion mounting a "standard 3X9 scope" on a carry handle sets the scope so much higher than any other optic on any other weapon in my collection it becomes useless to me. Again my opinion.

I don't know J Mack I used that set up with the carry handle mount with a red dot and loved it.  I like the reflex with no handle and BUIS now.

Like I tried to say above it seems like most guys that try spacers or handle mounts end up with a flat top and a cantilever mount for their telescopic scope or a special AR specific mount for their reflex or red dot and never look back.
So my advice stands if your budget permits get a optic/mount combo to allows you get descent cheek weld on you AR the first time and don’t waste your money trying to save it.

I agree, J Mack.  I placed it originally on my carry handle, and had an issue with it being a tad bit too high.  It looked a little goofy too.  I'm going to go test drive this POS a little later.  I guess I'll recycle enough cans until I can afford that ACOG (that outlook seems like it won't come until a day after doomsday, unfortunately).

Bushmaster used to sell a snap on cheek piece that snapped onto the standard CAR stock and gave good eye alignment with a carry handle type mount. I had one, but I'm not sure what I did with it when I went to my flattop upper.

I find it funny When NC star first came out all you hear is "oh its crap you can not have good optics that cost that cheap," so on and so on.  Now people are actually trying and recommending them.

Well, folks, to my satisafction, the NC Star model POS, worked surprisingly well!  I shot 250 rounds (after getting it as close to zero as I could), and had a very good time with it from that point on.  Did not come loose and maintained its zero.  I guess time will be the real test, huh?  Fingers crossed until that point (or, of course, the day after Doomsday, when I'll actually get an ACOG).

Has any one dealt with one of these?  The Barska Electro scopes?  I would like to see how it compares with the NCStar as a cheap/yet reliable scope to put on my AR while I wait for the lottery so I can afford an Aimpoint/ACOG/Eotech. ;)  I like the 3x9 scope but it takes up too much room on my rifle and sits just right to not allow my MBUS.

I bought an NcStar Mark III for my 700, and it worked great until I actually tried to dial it in. The turrets are so loose that the point of impact shifts from mere recoil up to +/- 1MOA for EACH SHOT. Its $160 down the tubes.

If the scope breaks then he can remove it and deploy the MBUS.  Not super fast but it's not likely the killer whistle pigs will get him.  If it's a zombie then he can use the scope tube like a big ghost ring.  ;)
