3 gun at Gem County R and G club in Emmett
« on: August 19, 2009, 09:32:37 PM »
Gem County will be having a 3 gun on the 30th of this month.  Here is a link to the calender http://www.gcrgc.org/calendar09.html
I think the entry fee is only $10 or $20 and this is a fun little match.  If you have ever thought about trying 3 gun, this is your chance.  The steel rifle targets will only be about 120 yards away at the most, and Jim S. and Dave B. put on a great little match.  It is a great match for new shooters and kids.  I think this is going to be my 10yo first match.  Lots of fun!!
Adios,
TG

TG,
My ammo closet is running low ! Did Jim or Dave give you an idea of round count or divisions? (pump, auto optics etc).

This is from the Gem County website:
3 Gun Match. Registration at 8:30am and match start at 9:00am until 3:00pm. Four stages with 120 rifle, 60 pistol, and 50 shot.

Doesn't look like it will be really ammo intensive, and you shouldn't need too many more rounds than this as the rifle steel will be pretty close.

So each stage will require 120 rifle, 60 pistol, and 50 shot? or is that total for the match?  Also what kind of shot is required?  I have only ever done one of these, and it was when I was 15 or 16 with my dad and I didn't know all that much about firearms.  Something I definitely want to get back into and this sounds like a good one to do that.  One more question, what other gear do I need (besides ear and eye protection)?

Those round counts will be for the entire match.  Some stages might be only pistol and rifle, some might be pistol shotgun...it just depends on what Jim has in mind.
I use whatever shot is the cheapest at the time.  7 1/2 Estates or Federal will work just fine.
Besides a rifle, pistol, and shotgun, you will need the following:
Pistol holster and mag pouches - Probably four or five if you are shooting single stack, and two if you are shooting double stack.
Something to carry shotgun shells in/on.  I would be surprised if you had to load more than 10 on one stage.  If you don't have anything at all, a dump pouch would work just fine.  If you don't have that, I have a ton of extra shotgun equipment I'd be happy to let you borrow.
Really, that is about it.  When I started going to these, I would bring everything I owned just to be safe.  20, 30, 42, 48, and 100 round AR mags, rifle sling, shotshell holders that went on my chest, belt, arm, and gun, and four or five mag pouches.  I don't ever remember needing them all, but I sure felt good having them!!
If you need some gear, let me know.  I'd be happy to loan you something.

Will any shotgun shells work for this? 7 1/2 Estates. like trap loads? How about AR ammo, just FMJ? I have never shot in a 3 gun match before and I don't really know all of the details yet.

If they run in your gubn you should be ok. The only time I've had any issue wasn't with the load but with my spread pattern being too wide to knock a place off a texas star for example. I've shot this 3 gun several times in years past and typically they will run 2 weapons per stage a long gun then a handgun. I don't remember them doing any stages where you use all 3 in the same stage...doesn't mean this year they wont. So you'll need a way to hold your shotshells, pistol and rifle mags. Some guys use tach vests byut most use a bandolier for the shotgun, mag pouches and pockets...

I have shot the emmett 3 gun many times and there will be or at least has been at least one semi long stage with all three guns and like all else has said if it runs in your gun your GTG. I can't make it (shit) gonna be at the gun show in Mtn Home. This 3 gun is one of the best in the valley especially if Tammy S. makes her famous beans. Lunch a day of three gun shooting, friends, sunny weather, son thats heaven on earth. ( and I gotta be in Mtn Home)
All who shot, I salute you !

Thanks for filling in for me Pops and Zona.  Been a busy couple of days.  What they said is right.  Like I said before, If you haven't ever shot 3 gun, this is a great match to crack out on.  Lots of fun, low key, and plenty of time to ask questions, and get help.  If you are even interested in this, you should come out and sign up.  If you just come out to watch, as soon as one person shoots a stage, you'll be sorry you didn't sign up.

If you contemplated coming out to the match and didn't, you REALLY missed out.  It was a lot of fun and Jim's wife Tammy served up some of the best Chile I have ever eaten...along with some other great stuff!
Stage one was the long range rifle stage that also had pistol and shotgun.  I think everyone used at least 90 rifle rounds, 20 pistol and 14 shot.
Stage two was rifle pistol and shotgun as well.  Two plate racks and two paper targets.  Plate racks had to be engaged from one barrel with shotgun or pistol, two rifle paper target with 3 rounds each, and then the plate racks again with either the shotgun or the pistol (whichever one you didn't shoot first).
Stage 3 was four poppers, a dueling tree and two Double Spinners.  Engage the poppers with shotgun, and with the pistol, shoot the dueling tree over and back, and spin both of the spinners.
Stage four was a pistol rifle stage.  Five paper targets on either side of the pit and three at the end of the pit partially covered by no shoots.  This was a total hosefest!  check it out here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=20Q1gJjSNEE   36 rounds, 14.87 seconds, no misses  :headbang:  Good fun indeed!!
