Campus carry resources?
« on: August 07, 2009, 06:19:45 PM »
Hey all.  Looks like I might get an opportunity to bring up the no-carry policy at a BSU committee meeting.  I want to present a clear case for changing the policy on campus carry, something that is logical and that the administration would understand.  Can anyone recommend resources that would be beneficial in compiling that argument?

I've been the Campus Director for Students for Concealed Carry on Campus here at Oregon State for about two years now, you can find a slew of information here:

www.concealedcampus.org

You should find everything you need there, if you need any additional help, feel free to PM me.

Just remember Logic doesn't work, Use Emotion

Use broad sweeping generalizations, inaccurate factual statements and attach them with emotional arguments that they can't fight against. Use the words us and all a lot.

Something like, if everyone on campus was forced to carry guns, the nobody would every die. If you ban firearms you are telling us all that you want us all to die, and I can't believe that you would want us all to die. Therefore carrying concealed should be mandated for all able bodied people on campus to prevent us all from dieing.

Seriously though, Best of Luck!

Safety and security.  I volunteered to be on the staff committee since I have an interest in that area (and I'm staff).  I have brought up the topic of campus carry once before but at the time the director of campus security was new.  I'd like another take at the same question and wanted to have it well researched.

This issue came up in the last legislative session.  There was consideration of a bill prohibiting post-secondary schools from banning CCW.  Kustra testified that he was strongly opposed.  I believe the other University presidents did the same.  Most of the faculty in my dept are against it too - some very strongly.  Perhaps you can work change from within - best wishes!

I knew it wasn't going to be an easy task ;)  The new Director of Campus Security is ex-FBI from Utah.  When I asked him about the policy as it related to the preemption law just after he took the spot, he said he realized the issue was going to come up and would need to be addressed.  I am hoping that is an indication of a willingness to at least investigate and not outright non-consideration.

Well, at least he's from Utah.  I believe that Utah is the only state that "allows" CCW at public post-secondary schools?  Or at the least, the current situation is still in some sort of litigation.  People may forget, but at Univ. of Idaho, where I went to grad school, guns were allowed in the dorm rooms because so many students hunted.  Or, maybe everyone just did it and didn't bother to say anything.  As far as I know, there was never a problem due to this practice.  The current policy requires guns to be stored at the Campus Police facility.

Link to the firearms policy at Univ. of Idaho:

Boise State's policy appears to be even more restrictive:

Idaho State has a similar policy to UI:

And here's a link to a CNN article from 2008 regarding CCW at Utah Universities:

I think it's great that you're bringing this issue up in your committee!

I think it is also important about making a clear distinction that you only want to allow CCW, rather than promote and encourage it.  I think that the consensus among people who don't know much about the topic is that by allowing CCW's it, will just turn the campus into a gun toting community.

I don't know about you guys, but if someone doesn't feel safe handling a gun, I certainly don't feel safe with them handling it either.  I'm not saying that firearms education is un-important, but rather that firearms are not for everybody.  Which is why I think that it is very important to make it very clear that you only want to allow people who feel comfortable carrying to carry, and that your not promoting people to go out and buy firearms and seek training.  But rather the just letting the people who are already capable of defending themselves and others to do so.

I also say instead of looking up sources that promote CCW on campus(not that it would be a bad approach), you should take a look at the arguements for not allowing it and come at them with a new angle.  Otherwise it will be likely be just be you regurgitating arguements they have already heard.  Come at them with something fresh that they have never heard.
