What are you going to use it for?  That's a tough one, but I'd probably go XD (then again I already have a sexy Kimber  ;))

It would be an all around firearm. House gun, carry, plinking... and so on. Basically a gun to replace my Smith & Wesson 9mm.

XD comes with 3 mags, double mag carrier, and holster in a nice carrying case.  It comes in an arrange of calibers, and sizes with the benefit of having a higher capacity magazine.

Yeah, what Inbound said.  Also they are lightweight, relatively inexpensive and easy to maintain, clean and shoot. And lastly...everyone should own and shoot one of the fantastic plastics (Glock, XD, HK, M&P, etc).

I grew up on a Colt 1911 made in 1914 so im kinda skeptical on plastics. but i was very impressed when i shot PV74's 45 XD and have changed my mind on polymer pistols.

I shoot my XD 40SW in IPSC with handloads. I load a 180 gr Laser Cast truncated cone bullet loaded to an OAL of 1.130. 1000's of rounds and no problems.

I shoot reloads through my XD45.  It doesn't feed SWC's reliably.

No brainer.  Get the compact.  With the extended mag it's the same size as the service.  It'll be easier to carry concealed with the compact mag.

I am spoiled by the heft, balance, fit and finish and of course the trigger.

Signed,
Biased 1911 shooter!

I love my Glocks, but the worst 1911 trigger in the world is better than the best Glock trigger (but yours comes close Fidel!!).

I had Canyon Creek do the trigger on my XD, Rich does excellent work.  I also have Dawson sights. Stainless steel guide rod, different recoil springs that I change to suit different loads. And a bunch of other parts.

To me the XD's are top heavy.  I don't care for them very much.

Have you looked at STI's Spartan?  Its a very reasonably priced single stack 1911 and STI's are probably the best built 1911's out there, that I've seen.

For plastic, I prefer Walther, Glock and S&W M&P.

Ive thought of getting a Springfield GI or Milspec and just sending off the pistol to get work done as i can afford it. but i think i am gona wait on the 1911 and get one down the road when i can afford to what i want the first time.

I had a Springfield GI model 1911, never had an issue with it. Whereas my Kimber did have a tendency to jam once in awhile. And at about the 2000 round mark it became a jam-o-matic which I cured by installing a new recoil spring.

Ok , I'll jump in since others are making other suggestion.

Tarus 24/7 Pro.

Had it for a couple months  and have shot a couple thousdand rounds. New , HSM and my own reloads.

Not a single feeding problem, not a single fail tofire or eject problem.

Shot all kinds of bullets and they all feed perfectly.

I love the Henie sights too.

The grip is the best I have ever had.

How did I know that you were going to suggest a Tauri?

Thanks to all who responded. I went and picked up a XD on sat and I love it. I ended up with the service model the compact was just a little to short for my likeing, best part about getting this pistol I only paid $180 for it from Cabelas. gotta love gift cards.
