Removing crimp in .223 brass
« on: June 08, 2009, 05:19:34 AM »
So what are you guys using to remove the crimp?  I was going to get the press mounted RCBS unit but it looks like I need a special washer direct from RCBS as I have the A-2 press.

Dillion makes a good one as well as RCBS's, not sure of the need for a washer.......
Have the RCBS no problems just slow........

I asked the same question of a friend. He had the rcbs & the Dillon and said the rcbs worked but not nearly as well as the Dillon. I have the Dillon.

CH Tool and Die Primer pocket Swage. I have one, I've tried it on a couple of pieces but I haven't really put it through it's paces... seems like a good product, and since I have a single stage press for whatever I don't want to do on the 550, I can put it on that one and de crimp to my hearts content.

At least that's the plan, but I haven't sat down and done it yet.

look under priming tools.

If budget was no issue, then the Dillion would be the hands down pick... but at a 1/4 the cost, I thought I would give this a go.

I don't remove it . I just re-prime it with my RCBS hand priming tool . It worked great on both Lake City and WCC headstamp brass .

I used RG's Dillon on a few cases and then bagged the whole extra step . I guess my laziness worked out in my favor that time .

I was using CCI primers if that makes any difference .

The washer on the RCBS unit depends on the diameter of the opening around the press ram which has varied over the years. It isn't needed for my 1982 vintage Rockchucker but the 50's vintage A2 does need it.

Actually just about any reasonably thick washer of a diameter that goes over the ram would work. They can deform a little over time but just turn it over.

The swage post post that breaks the crimp will embed itself into primer pocket on the up stroke of the ram. To remove the round from the post the set has a "cup" that seats upside down with a hole the post goes through. On the down stroke the cup is supposed to meet the body of the press and your stroke pulls the ram down and pops the brass off. So in some presses you need the washer.

It does help to have a moderately sturdy table for the press as depending on the crimp it can take a fairly abrupt rap to pop the case loose.

With practice it's not hard to average 15 or 20 cases a minute. And it only needs to be done once.
All data is flawed, some just less so.

Wow you must be good. I always managed to smash primers and jam up the priming tool even if I don't ream the pocket enough!

Until I get around to buying a Dillon, I've been killing my fingers, reaming it out by hand using the RCBS Deburring Tool.

I'm willing to work out a lend-lease for an RCBS pocket swager for both large and small primers.

I set mine up in a drill press on low speed.  Works great and I'm not out the $95 on Dillons tool.

I've found that most of the time, i don't need to remove it.  just like MikeN.  i just re-prime using my Lee hand primer and most of the time, they re-prime just fine.  there are usually a few that the primer doesn't want to seat, but i just set those aside and use my deburring tool.

I like the Dillon unit, thanks again RG.
