Need help from Bow hunters
« on: May 24, 2009, 04:24:32 PM »
Thinking about taking up the bow and am looking for help and advice on purchasing my first bow . I don't have a lot of cash so I will probably be looking at some used stuff but I am not even sure where to begin . I know I want a compound but don't know how to measure for draw length , etc . Thanks in advance to anyone who can help .

Have you bought any bowhunting magazines or books to read?  There used to be a club called Nampa Bow Chiefs.  Not sure if they still exist or not.  I haven't been bow hunting in about 8 or 9 years ao probably would'n be much help.  I shoot a "High Country" brand.

Randy at the Meridian Sportsman's Warehouse is a really nice guy & used to have his own bow shop.  He'd be a great source for sizing, brands, etc.

There's also a place in Boise near the corner of Roosevelt & Rose Hill called Bowhunter's retreat - a little shop, but they've been there a long time.

I shoot Martin bows (the brand) and have been very happy with them.  Got the first one from Bowhunter's Retreat, and the second one from Randy.

Matthews bows are very good but a little spendy.  PSEs are popular and good as well.

I haven't picked my bow up for a couple of years though...  I think the last thing I shot with it was a carp. :)

Good luck, it's a fun sport.
