Coyote
« on: August 15, 2007, 10:49:27 PM »
Went out on Sat after noon to call some dogs and got this young female hiking in to our spot to call.
We had 3 more come in but they must have caught scent of the dead dog, they never got closer then 600 yards. Saw some antelope and what may have been a ferret but couldnt tell.

Good job,
Oh and it was probally a weasel you saw, very similar in appearance to ferret. We have them and have shot  several also. Thought it was a ferret until we took a picture and showed it to someone.

When they are young they look just like a ferret.

NGO - yea i had never seen one in the wild before, its was real small and skinny. I shot it but at 20 feet through a 4.5X scope and low light it was hard to make out, and it made it down its hole before i could check it out

I might have to find out what NGO starts doing with tanning, might be nice to have a few furs hanging around the garage for a cold day...

Been doing a lot of reading lately, brain tanning is going to produce buckskin. which is a very soft leather, not water proof mind you but what I might do the first couple of times. This would be suitable for a wall hanging. Some of the chemical stuff will produce a good water proof leather suitable for hats, jackets and outdoor wear.

I am looking forward to seeing what JR's friend has. When I get back I'll set up some fleashing boards and make sure I have the right tools.

A very good book I got from the library , and still have checked out is "The Ultimate Guide to Skinning and Tanning"

by Monte Burch

More comprehensive than some other books I have read.  Some were written by some dirty hippies that were more or less Indian wannabees.

I'll be glad to share what I am learning as I progress down this path.

I figured instead of a new thread i would just add on to this one.

The first pic is of a dog a buddy and i tag teamed about 3 weeks ago. We called in this one in about 15 min using a jack rabbit distress. He came in from my right  down ravine at about 300 yards and came into about 10 yards in front of me. My friend hit him twice with buckshot and he didn't go down so i put him down with one shot to the neck.

These two i shot on Saturday . The first after about 10 min of the jack rabbit, and came down a fence line and came to about 75 yards and took 2 to go down. The second came in to the same call in about 15 ,i barely saw her head sticking up through the sage and gave her one to the chest.

over all it was a good day hit 4 places called in 4 dogs one my buddy just plain missed the other was hung up and wouldn't get closer then 500 yards.
They are starting to get really nice thick coats, might have to start learning how to skin them out.

I think I just saw this dog, I was watching Resident Evil earlier tonight!

I'd love to try my AR10 on some coyotes one of these days.
