shocking my self on 9mm and other ammo availability
« on: April 30, 2009, 10:54:57 AM »
I just scared myself. I thought I was pretty well informed...

Until recently, like the last month or two, ammo (in this case 9mm ammo) was readily available, it’s just people didn’t like the pricing on it.
Then high quality defensive ammo’s prices sky-rocketed (50% increase in two months on some of it!)
Then it dried up.
So I spent half an hour looking up the normal (and not so normal) suppliers for ammo and the sites that usually have LOTS (tens if not hundreds of thousands of rounds) of ammo in stock.

No joke. No exaggeration:  I found ONE box of 90 grain 9mm ammo! I found a case or two of frangible ammo (used for law enforcement for shooting inside ballistic “shoot houses”)… not good for much. That’s it in about 15 of the sites I’ve checked out… normally they would have so much ammo you can’t make up your mind in several hours!

Not good !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thoughts or links to places with 9mm and 5.56/.223 ammo?  (I only specifically researched 9mm ammo including ALL types like FMJ, HP etc… only did “spot” searches on .223 ammo… NONE of that either)

I've just never seen such a widespread "NOTHING" out there before. A friend went to 8 places across the valley and while he found a few (not lots, just a couple handfuls), there were one-box limits or you can only buy it if you buy a gun stuff.

The ammo situation this last month has gotten pretty bad for sure. Walmart cant even get the stuff, and we know how huge they are. I havnt seen more than a box or two of 9mm, at a time, no .45 for months, and the same for .40. I find myself making a daily pilgrimage to several of the local stores in hopes that when it does come in Im there for my little bit.

Walmart on Overland in Boise had about 15 of the Winchester 100 round white boxes of .40 this morning at 5:30.

Of the .380, 9mm, 38 special, .40 and .45 it seems that .40 is more often available locally.
All data is flawed, some just less so.

Seems like $.27/ea for reloaded (used cases) 9mm is kind of steep, but its supposedly available so I guess that's the price some people pay.

I got really lucky as one of my shooting pards down here in Vegas just swapped over from 9mm to 40 and sold me all his 9mm at last years prices . I picked up a case of 147 grain Federal HP and nearly a 1000 Winchester White box to ad to my stash . I still have lots of reloads and primers and powder as well so I am not gonna be hurting for 9mm for a while .

Glad NGO got me into panic buying mode when it came to ammo ... LOL

Just a hint but you guys might want to pool your money and see if you can find out who unloads the trucks at your local Wal-Mart . My buddy kicked the guy in Twin Falls 20 bucks and every time a shipment comes in he calls him and lets him know so he can get there before the dealers do . He just picks up a few boxes of .45 so he can go out shooting but at least he has a fighting chance .

In phoenix, boxes of 100 rd Winchester White box are going for $30-$35 a box.  I've seen it listed for as high as $40,  but realistical i think it's only selling for 30-35.  .45 wwb is around $.5/rd, it's nuts.
