Picked up my first handgun today.
« on: March 26, 2009, 11:38:04 PM »
A Ruger SR9. I chose it mainly because of the ergo's. It's slimmer than a 1911 making it ideal for carry. Out of all the guns I've held, this one made me stop and stare because it just felt that good. I also got to shoot it today and am very impressed. It was accurate and had light recoil compared to other 9mm's I've shot. Anyway, here are some pics.

and my target from today.

The bottom left is from 7 yards, rest are from 10. Rear sights are way off as I had to aim really low to even get on target. Don't ask me what happened on the top right.  :o

Keep in mind, This is only the 2nd handgun I've fired in over 4 years. Let me know what you guys think, feel free to ask any questions.  ;D

Nice looking gun, I've always wanted to try the SR9.

As for aiming, some guns shoot different... that gun might be setup so that you put the pumpkin on the post for aiming, and not in the center.

By that I mean that you put the center of the target ON TOP of the front sight post to hit center of the target.

Also, shoot a few hundred rounds through it before you do anything to the sights, especially if this is the first gun you gave bought, because you are still getting used to the gun and how it shoots, you may find that once you learn to shoot it better the gun will shoot where you want it to.

Remember focus on the FRONT SIGHT - let the target and the rear sights blur, and if you can keep both eye's open even better.

Now, good luck finding ammo  :( and have fun shooting.  ;D ;D

I shoot with a six o'clock hold. How I was trained in the AF. But with this gun, I had to aim about 3 inches low @ 10 yards. I'm going to bring it to the range tonight and adjust it accordingly.

This is how most handguns are set up btw.

;D Yea... That chairforce stigma. However, I was part of a high-tempo Air Control Squadron in Germany. We qualified on every weapon in our armory and we used them at least once a month during exercises.

I'm really falling in love with this gun.  ;D It was a little bit of a risky purchase being a new, recalled design. That and I've never fired one. But I couldn't be more impressed it with it. Specially now that it's starting to wear in.

I wanted one but the one I had ordered had been recalled along with all the rest.  I told them I didnt care I still wanted it but they would not send it to me.   >:(  The price on them was excellent.  If you dont mind me asking how much and where did you find it?

$440 at Impact. They have them at cabela's for like $489 I think. There were 2 I put this one on layaway at the beginning of march. The other one was sold shortly after that. Both the Blackened models. It's funny, the day I picked it up, the guy that bought the other one was at the range shooting his.  :)

That competition shooting? I need to get a holster first.

IDPA is whatever you want it to be. It is the BEST place to find out if what you carry, and how you carry it will work on the street. There are no trick guns allowed, no super trick holsters, and no super hi capacity guns.

You bring your carry gun, in your carry gear, with some sort of cover garment, long shirt, coat, vest. A course of fire is set up to test your shooting abilities and agility. For instance can you draw while lying on your back and engage a couple of targets, and then get up and run. Or can you shoot on the while moving backwards with your weak hand or strong hand?

IDPA is the place to shoot your gun on a non square range, at moving targets, steel, paper and enjoy the company of other like minded individuals that enjoy shooting.

If you want to make a competitive game, you can do that to. But only if YOU want it to be.

Hope to see you there!

Nothing wrong with any of those groups. It's a human you are striving for and any of those would be a good stomach wound.

Wyatt Earp belived that if you shot someone in the stomach the fight was gone out of them. And he most likely shot enough folks that way to know.

Personally I believe that anything past about 7 feet is out of handgun range. After 7 feet it's a shotgun and after 50 yards it's a rifle issue -  ;D

feet - - The govmint did a field study on shootouts and the average range that a suspect was engaged. 7 feet - - most shorter - -

Just to clarify, IDPA is NOT a training program, if you know what you want to accomplish, you can use it as your own personal training regime, but don't expect to get tactical training instruction from the Saftey officers or the Match Director.

It is fun, it is a blast, and you don learn a lot, just wanted to clarify.
