AR-15 Magazines, what do you prefer?
« on: March 23, 2009, 02:31:45 PM »
I was curious what kind of AR-15 mags that everyone prefers.  I have managed to collect quite a few, and am trying to figure out which ones are good and which ones suck.  I have a couple marked Larsen Firearms w/ green followers aluminum i think.  A few C Products (Al), some w/ green and some w/ orange followers.  Okay industries, Adventerline, sanchez, and one clear plastic one marked ramline(all w/ black followers).  To me it seems like a mag is a mag, but i've heard that some just don't work.  I also heard of people only using pmags (maybe just hype).  Anyway, I thought that I would see what you guys prefer.

I like PMAGs and that is what I am currently purchasing, but I'm not tossing my GI Al mags that are made by various mfgs (lowest bidder).  If it works it works and who cares what anybody thinks about it.

Wolf springs adds about 10% to your springs and the new Generation lll Magpul no tilt
followers, yet the Magpul floor plates. Make up a great combination. Greatly reducing
mag problems.......
Lots of other stuff out there.............Luck Nomad.........

I like Lancer L5's and PMAGs.
Q: What was the most positive result of the "Cash for Clunkers" program?
A: It took 95% of the Obama bumper stickers off the road.

PMAGS are also my favorite so far they seem to work great plus you can beat the hell outta them and the still work flawlessly.  I also love the dust covers that come with them!

Dang, guess i'll have to get my hands on some pmags.  If ammo weren't so expensive right now, i'd just try all of these out.

Same. I am a big fan of the PMAGs. The price is right and the quality is there. Can't argue with USGI mags as they have worked well for many and I have a bunch of them. I also have some HK 416 mags - heavy, dent the feed lip if dropped on them while loaded - not worth the price in my opinion. I haven't had enough experience with the Lancer L5 translucent mags or the Fusil mags but both seem to be the answer to a question no one was asking. Probably good mags but not better than a PMAG or USGI.

My $0.02.

+1 on pmags, amazing durability. Runner up is bushmaster's USGI mags, I haven't tried any of the more expensive mags out there though

I like PMags and pretty much use them exclusively now.

I also like the Brownells mags that Travis Gibson is selling.  Very well made and have the Magpul follower.

I have an assortment like you do and all have worked well for me.  I guess I'm just on a PMAG kick right now.

What kind of issues did you have with the C products?  I heard good things about those.

I just ordered some CProducts SS Teflon coated mags for 12.99 a piece from 44mag.com. Arfcom has good reviews on them.

From what I've heard you don't want to leave that Ramline mag loaded. Supposedly the feedlips aren't very strong and can warp or fail under extended pressure while loaded. Same with the thermold plastic mags.

All data is flawed, some just less so.

What kind of issues did you have with the C products?  I heard good things about those.

on more than one of the 11 mags i bought through the ARFCOM group buy, i've had failure to feed issues.  caused by the magpul follower (i bought them thinking they'd be better) getting stuck part way down the mag and failing to push the rounds up.  i would take out the mags and the rounds would be loose in the mag until i got the follower to release.

One mag was bad enough that i had to send back to cproducts.  in their defense, they took care of me no questions asked.  but the best customer service is the one you never have to use.  the other mags seemed to "break in" and seem to work ok now, but i won't trust my life to them.

My D&H mags with standard green followers have worked every single time straight out of the box.

Adventure Line is one of the older GI mag manufacturers.  That one may be old and out of spec.

Agreed. I have a bit of a biased opinion because I've only used lowbid GI mags and PMAGs. I bought the PMAGs on the recommendation of those here, and if I had a choice for future purchase I would get more!

Ive got a mxed bag of mags. I like the pmags for reliability. I dont like them for the simple fact that they usually will not drop free of the magwell. I like the mil-spec aluminum mags because they mostly function well, and drop free. I have damaged a mag from dropping free,  however when i look look at a black rifle I like to see metal. I guess if it is reliable, i dont care what it looks lke....
