Barrel Cutting on a 12 ga
« on: March 05, 2009, 09:42:40 PM »
Ok, so after Cabelas Pissed me off with a sale on a firearm they don't even carry.....that's another story.....I starting to abounded the thought getting an already made defensive shotgun and going with much lower cost Mossberg Maverick full size and just cutting down the barrel. I know it needs to be at least 18" to be leagal and I would cut it to 18.5" to be safe.
Here's the question, has anyone here ever cut down a shotgun barrel? If so, where do I start measuring from? Probably a crazy question but I don't really want to go to jail for miss measuring the barrel. What is the best tool to use? A hack saw seems like the logical answer but seems a bit sloppy, I thought maybe a pipe cutter would do the trick if I work it slow enough? Can you buy "Breecher" tips for the newly cut off barrel? Any other advise would be helpfull, again I'm considering it at this point, haven't made up my mind all the way yet. I'm still looking for a production defense shotgun for now but that could change if the mood strikes. Thanks in advance for the advise.
I don't know what your problem is, but I bet its hard to pronounce.

A gunsmith is a good place to start, dressup of the end inside and outside....
If you want to do the job find a 18 1/2" barrel and lay it next to yours
you will see where to make the cut... Our local gunsmith charged 20 to
cut the barrel off looks good and is done right.......

Who did you use? Impact guns would be a convenient place for me to go, anyone know what they would charge? That sounds like a much better way to go for the $$  it could cost more than that if I screw the first one up. Thanks again for the info!

I almost did the same thing when I found a 24 inch maverick at Walmart.  Didnt end up getting it because they do not take a CCL as ID.  I was just going to find a real fine hacksaw which will take a while but you wont get as much burring.  Then I was just going to take a dremmel to finish the de-burring process shouldnt be that hard.  As far as the breacher I never planned on using one.

If you do it yourself, measure from the closed breach-face.
18 in the limit, so go 18.5 to be safe.
I've done one before with a band-saw, cleaned up with a file nicely.

Chase at Impact can do it as well, just give him a call for price.

You could always buy mine. See it on Zidaho, search under "rixret", don't be afraid of the listed price. I do consider offers.

Well after all that, I decided to just buy one factory shortened. I picked up a Mossy 590 with a 20" barrel, but 9 shot capacity. Came with a heat shield and bayonet lug (anyone know where to get a bayonet for it) no breacher barrel but its a pretty sweet shotgun and I am a big fan of the mossbergs.
Thanks for all the info.

A metal lathe would make a nice, smooth cut.

A bandsaw with a metal cutting blade would probably do alright though.

I have been looking at prices for the bayonets....damn!! I really am a cheap bastard!! $100+ for the bayonet?!?! I'll just have to make sure they don't get close enough to have to use the sticker. (9 shots should help a bit) I found a few cheaper ones on CTD but they were M7's, don't really know what the fit difference would be if any. I'll have to do more research. Its supposed to take the regular M-16 type what ever that is.

does it have a ribbed top? if its just the barrel surface(compleltly round) you could just use a pipe cutter and buff it out with a dremel

I found it at Big 5 Sporting goods on glenwood and state. They had one more after I bought mine. It was on sale for $359.99 yesterday. I've never seen this gun at any other store even other Big 5's. The person I dealt with was Jaime, she was very nice and quite knowledgeable in the firearm dept. Which is refreshing, as I have not had good luck with customer service in a gun dept at a sporting goods store in a long time.

I checked with Big 5 and the one they had let was blued, so i let it go.

But i did find one here in Mtn. Home, it was more then i wanted to pay but no one else had the parkerized model or could give me a time as to when they could get one in. So i picked it up, now i just need to get a bayonet.

Ok So I found a maverick at a pawn shop, plus a nice compund bow $100 for both.  Shotgun had never been cleaned but now it looks pretty sweet now that it is all purtty.  When you measure for the barrel cutting where is it from?  Do I just pull the barrel and measure from the very end of the breach side?      Never I mind I figured it out.

I thought there was another thread asking about bayonets. Anyway, go to D&J Enterprises in Caldwell, down next to Golden Palace chinese place. Duane, a good friend of mine, owns/runs it. He must have a hundred different bayonets there. He has one of the largest militaria stores in the pacific northwest-patches, badges, insignia, uniforms, pins, medals, etc.  Collector items and user-friendly stuff.  He is open odd-ball hours, so you might want to call first.
You probably should take the shotgun with you.  Tell him I sent ya.
(Some of the shotguns take an M7, M9, or even the old M1917 models.
