I wont fall victim

« on: June 28, 2007, 04:14:51 PM »

Here's what I did last weekend!

Me, a buddy and his pup went up by McCall for a an over nighter backpacking trip to Hum lake.  It was good conditioning for some of our upcoming adventures that will be 3 times as long, twice the distance and 10 times the difficulty as this.  Packs weighed about 35lbs. total with tent, sleeping bag and all the other usual kit.  The best part was that there was no one else there, except for a hippy that came through late afternoon and the fishing was awesome!!  Also, there was a demon creature in the night, it's to scary to tell the tale here, so those who show up to pizza tonight will get the full scoop.

On to the pics!!!

The ridge we hiked up to to get to the lake.  Trail wasnt always marked well and there was a lot of deadfall to jump over, crawl under and go around.

The destination:

Cool shot of the ridge we just came over:

After setting up camp we decided to try our hands at some angling

WooHoo!  Success is ours!  We only fished for about an hour and this is what we got:

Close up to show size next to my kick ass Leatherman Wave:

Mmmmm...

Evening time:

The next morning we climbed up to a ridge/saddle to check out the ridge we have to climb over in August to get to Enos lake.  It's going to be a treacherous 10 hour death march that's for sure.  Here's a view of Hum lake from about half way up:

Another lake suitable named 'Mosquitos from Hell Lake'

Me and Z with Enos ridge behind us.  We're climbing over that biatch in two months:

Any idea what kind of snake this is?  He was just hanging out by camp enjoying the shade with us.

Great pics.  Looks like awesome fishing.  :-)  I can point out a few lakes north of McCall, if you are interested, that are interesting.  (Need a topo map).

As for the snake, I am guessing it is a common Garter snake

Thanks for the comments Rifter.  I'd definitely be interested in the lakes north of McCall if they are 1:  Have sweet views and 2:  Are a challenge to get to.

Box Lake off the West side of Lick Creek Rd is a real nice lake.  3 miles or so, good trail, straight up for the first mile, and straight down for the last 1/2 mile.  Mackay Lake is around 6 miles off the East side of Lick Creek also.  You can get to Mackay from Snowslide, but it's a bit of a walk up and over the ridge seperating the two.

Awesome pictures.  I was up there when the forest was burning in 94 or so.  My memory is not what it used to be so can't be exactly sure of the year.  It is definately some beautiful country.

I've actually been to Box, Mackay, Snowslide, Enos, Crystal and a few others up there also.  Very cool area!

Sweet pics JR, thanks again for sharing.

The snake is just another freaking ugly one in my book. I am not fond of snakes at all. Grin

Great stuff JR. If you haven't done it yet, take the hike up to Loon lake to check out the old B-23.
It's a pretty short hike, but seeing the remains of the old aircraft make it worth it.

Also, on Lick creek, check out Slick Rock...all your climbing needs solved.

The McCall / Cascade area is a fantastic place to hike and fish, there are an incredible number of lakes in the area.  Great place for mosquito hunting as well  Smiley
