Last weekend, Hawley, this weekend, Trinity
« on: June 10, 2007, 08:33:00 PM »
went camping up Smith creek this weekend. it's just outside Prairie.  had a good time and got to ride the hell outta my ATV.  :D

got up Saturday morning and packed the atvs to head up into the Trinity lakes and do some fishing, but apparently that wasn't gonna happen.  we were about a mile and a half from the lakes when we ran into a snowbank that still covered the road.  no fishing for us.  :(  but it was still a sweet ride anyway.  we were almost to the Trinity Mtn. lookout tower too.  couldn't get there either due to the snow.  so we said screw it and headed back to camp.

then a little later on, we rode up Smith creek rd to the top where we have hunted the last few years.  it's pretty but it's also very steep and therefore, hard to hunt.  we had some down trees that made getting there a bit of a challenge.  but low gear and 4-wheel drive on the ATVs is, as JR would say, BITCHIN!!

then we rode back to camp and popped a couple ground squirrels for a bit and then saw the storm moving in so we packed up late and headed home.

some pics:

the first set of trees:  these weren't the ones by our hunting camp but they were keeping a lot of rigs from heading up to trinity Mtn.

the snow bank that kept us from making it to the lakes and the tower.  you can see the tower in the background of one of the pics.  the turn to the trinitys was about half way between us and the tower on the road.

and here is one taken from our hunting camp looking back down smith creek.  the trinity mtn tower is behind us.  we are one ridge over.

Looks good SM.  To bad the snow kept you from going all the way.

I'll have to get some pics up of my latest adventures soon.  This summer has been officially dubbed "Extreme Summer Adventures '07" and will include Mt. Borah, Enos Lake, Banner Ridge, Indian Creek Triple Class 5 Black Diamond rafting, and perhaps a few surprise trips to who knows where.

I need you to give me some hikes that I can take the kids on.

Hey Spiif,

Take them up to 8th street you can hike, bike, and four-wheel it is really pretty to. If you bike or four-wheel it will go all the way to bogus. 8th street is a little bit farther back then Camels back park.

8th street is good with kids, about 2/3 up the you come to a pull over spot and their are trails to the right. You can do a short in and out 1 to 4 miles depending how you go.

Table rock from the bottom is good with the kids also.

Shaffes Butte is good also, several routes and lenghts. Great views and trees for shade. Really good for kids to enjoy and not too hard.

Buy them all CamelBack type bags to carry water. Survival kits, fire, first aid cheap stuff from Wal-Mart if need be. Walking sticks from Wal-Mart work well and are cheap.

Buying them $50 in gear they call their owe really gets them excited to use the stuff.

Call the sawtooth ranger district office in Mountain Home. They might know.
