AAR, Rode up to Hawley mtn. yesterday
« on: June 04, 2007, 09:39:36 AM »
So we took a little Ride on the ATVs yesterday up to the Hawley Mtn. lookout tower.  We went in from Harris Creek (bottom of hill in horseshoe bend) and rode up to the twoer.  it was 20 miles from the truck to the tower. it's doable in a 4WD (we did it a couple years ago) but it'll take a lot longer.

about 3/4 of the way there, we had a good sized black bear come across the trail about 25 yards in front of us.  Pretty cool to see and it was only the second wild bear i've ever seen. didn't have time to snap pics as the cam was burried in my gear and the bear didn't stick around to pose.

I took a few pics from the tower though:

Here is the tower. (unmanned currentley)

and some shots of the view from up there.

Still a little snow up on top

My ride

and looking back twards horseshoe bend.

All in all a good day.  scoped out a couple good looking new hunting spots as well.  this up in the same area of the big 6pt i had in my sights last fall.

Looks good.  I've been up to Hawley many of times, never have seen bear there though, good find (I'll give you the benefit of the doubt...this time). ;D

It's up near Horseshoe Bend.

It's up near Horseshoe Bend.

correct,  when you get to the bottom of the hill on the horseshoe bend side, hang a right on Harris creek rd.  we drove a few miles back in past all the trailers and big houses and found a place to pull off and then road up to the tower.

from that road you can drive down into placerville and on out to Idaho city through Grimes creek.  I think you can also get to Bogus basin too, but i haven't tried that yet.

I just got back from camping in Prairie this weekend, i'll get some pics from that up here shortly.
