Who Shoots Distance and What Do You Use?
« on: May 05, 2007, 07:23:49 AM »
The only rifle I've been able to shoot well at distance is the NDM-86 Dragunov in .308 using 168gr match ammo. The furthest I've shot for accuracy is 1,000yds at the Parma range. Anyone else?

is that truly .308 or the x54?

I really dig that 1/2 mile steel out at parma

I was using 175SMK, but I want to try 155s

.308, you can tell by the straight mag (x54 mags are curved). It's more accurate than the x54's only because you can't get true lightweight match ammo for the x54's. I use Georgia Arms "Canned Heat" 168gr match exclusively (although I've tested 173gr M118) as NDM-'s seem to love that bullet weight. If you go to the extreme SE corner of the Parma range then the 24" 600m gong & 36" 750m gong move to 750m & 900m respectively. If you're shooting x54 you might want to dig up some of the 7N1 SVD sniper ammo that came in not too long ago. It's still corrosively primed but it's currently the most accurate x54 ammo I know of and it's the correct weight for the bbl twist. I recently set up a duplicate of the Soviet SVD training target at 900m and fired 20rds rapid fire, no more than 4 seconds between shots except when changing mags. Managed a 50% hit rate w/the hits indicating wind blowing the others off target to the left. The design of the SVD bipod (which freefloats the bbl) allows you to steady your aim by pushing slightly forward while aiming. When you fire you ride the recoil back slightly then move forward back into the bipod "pocket" and on target w/o effort on your part. My only regrets are that I didn't start buying them sooner and that I don't own more of them!

I'd purchased several the past couple of years from CDNN when they still had them in stock @$1,699 (only 1,000 were made in .308, a special order in the late '80's, now all in private hands). My teenage son was able to hit the 750m gong the first day he shot mine and loved it so much I gave him a new one from my collection as a combo Christmas/birthday/graduation gift for the following 5 years. A 20yr-old copy of a 40yr-old semi-auto design w/chromed bore should not display such a high level of accuracy, my best 3-shot group at 500m is 4.5".

Darn, that LRTR shoot looks like fun! Since my NDM-86 setup is more for DMR I don't know how well it would do on such a COF.

Yes, that is me and I was shooting my 338 edge right there.  That was the funnest shoot I've ever been on and the 338 edge performed exceptionally well!

Nice pics RG!

I have an KAC SR25 .308 that I honestly haven't had a chance to wring out yet.  The most I've done is shooting rocks at 600+ yards.

Thanks JR, But I can't take all of the credit. Very little actually. I took the top photo and EDGE took the rest for me. Plenty more here: http://www.parmarng.org/Pix/LRTR-2007-05-05B/index.html

RG,

Let me know what you think of those rings after you get them mounted and all.  I was looking at the Seekins for my SPR also.

RG,

Were those groups shot with your FN?  I'm still trying to find a really good load for mine using the 175 gr SMK's.

Ralph,

Thank you very much!  Excellent work!  I need to do something like that.  Right now my data consists of a bunch of targets with the parameters written on them.  Its funny looking through your data at how similar my results are to yours.  For example, I've had great groups with the small loadings of Varget and RL-15, but of course the velocity is just too low also.

I'm going to try some of your Varget loads with the CCI primers, as I've not tried those primers yet.

Thanks again!

Cool.  I'm going to try some today with your load, if I can make it out to the super secret spot.

Regarding the after IDPA shoot, I'm glad you said something, I was begining to think no one was interested.  It sounded like they wanted to do shotgunning instead, so I was going to cancel.  If you'd rather do the shotgunning, let me know and I'll reschedule.

Well, I went out to shoot on my lunch hour and it was too windy to really get some good shooting in.  I was trying to zero my new scope and got it close enough, considering the wind.  I got the elevation good, but with wind gusts up to 20 MPH, blowing my target over, I didn't get to where I'm comfortable with my windage zero, I'll make sure my windage is ok on a day that there is no wind.

Anyway, I didn't try your load out, but I did put 5 into a quarter sized hole with a different load that I was working on.

Hey I recognize at least one face in the crowd here . Here is a pic of my H.S. Precision PRO HTR .

I just replaced the Super Sniper scope with a Leupold 6.5-20X50 and need to get out and re-zero it and try out the loads I have worked up for it .

Hi Mike,

How's that stick shooting?  Does it have a DM?  If so, how do you like it compared to the Badger that was on your last rifle?

The HS has their DBM on it . It feeds better than the Badger , and reloads are easier except for the latch is a little tougher to manipulate (IMO) than the Badger .The Badger however allows a longer OAL on your cartridges and dropping the mag is easier due to the lever . Magazines for the HS are around 110-120 bucks apiece versus the 60-70 for the AICS mags and I have been told they are not as robust . All things being equal I think the Badger is a better Overall setup .

I havent got to shoot but about 15 rounds through it since I got it and the loads were running a little hot for this barrel chamber combo so I have loaded some more ammo up for it and am planning on spending some time at the range next week as it looks like we are going to be working a 2 day week .
