Optical sights for AR-15
« on: January 22, 2009, 07:36:10 PM »
What's the best optical sight out there for the $$$$ to put on my AR-15.

Thanks,
Jester

You mean optical "sight"? A site would be like a website.

It really depends on the person, most of us probably have EOTech or Aimpoint optics. I have a scope just because I wanted to reach out a bit farther and have some fun that way.

If you want quality.........A dot=Aimpoint T-1
                                   An actual scope= ACOG
                                   OR........
An ACOG with a Doctor Optic on top.

Or, if you really want the heat,Nightforce .

i switched from an eotech to an aimpoint and throughly enjoy it. I think the perfect fit would be some type of 4x scope, variable or fixed to utilize the full potential of what the AR has in accuracy and range. But thats alot of weight. Acog's perfection

What is it you want to do? What is the goal/purpose of the optic?
1x scopes/dots for cqb
1-4x scopes for cqb and dsm
4x or more for a varmint gun perhaps

Figure what you want the optic to do then maybe narrow your price range to "under $1200" or "under $500" or under $250 - then we can give you an opinion to a better question like "What is the best 1-4x scope for my AR under $250?"

Boy, I guess I have a lot to learn about optics.  But definately want to keep it under $500.  By the way what does DSM stand for?

Thanks,
Jester

Well if you got 500 then decide what reticle you like better. The EoTech or Aimpont. With a Larue mount for the Aimpoint you are probably going to afford the Comp M4 model since the T1 costs more than that.

+1 on Zona's advice...

Figure out what you want out of an optic... a $2500 scope is great but if you want it for close up work, it's just a club.

I myself, since I only have 1 EBR, (Evil Black Rifle ) opted to get a 1-4x optic with an illuminated reticle. Gives me options for CQB and for some longer range fun when I want to, works in the dark with a light for CQB, etc...

Your needs may be different, and you may want to try out some different optics on guns to see what you really want.

Well I don't think I'll be doing too much CQB.  Most of shooting will be target practice, plinking and things like that.  If the bubble pops then I'll need it for other things. :o (Road Warriors)

What length is your barrel?

What configuration is your AR?  A2, A3, A4?

It's an 16" A3 with the standard front sight and removable A2 carry handle rear sight.

For me, I like the EOTech reticle much better than the simple red-dot. If I had BUIS I would use flip-ups and one of those Larue riser mounts that allows for a perfect lower 1/3rd cowitness. A lot of the guys have both, you can arrange to meet up at the range with any one of them so you can try your options before you make an investment.

If your rich, the ACOG is a nice way to go. I like EOTech. GG&G is selling the 512 for around $410 and it comes with a quick detach mount and lens covers.

If you're just going to plink with it, then a 1-4x optic or maybe a 10x Super Sniper.  If you think you might get into CQB, then EOTech and irons.

Hey, thanks for reminding me about the EOTech lens covers. I knew they had them, but had forgotten. Now I have one coming........... ;D.

lm45 - which one do you have?

Millet DMS-1, $219 online from some vendor, can't remember where. $89 for the Armalite mount. Complete setup about $300.

I'm reading more and more of the 3gun guys using and liking them, I'd prefer a Leupold CQ/M or whatever that is or a S&B short dot, but those are money...

My only problem now is my front sight post is in the way and it "cowitness" a little too well at 1x, 4x is fine. So I've got to put a new gas block on with a flip up front or put a riser on the AR to get it up.

Decisions, decisions...

And it would help to know if you wear glasses or contacts and wether or not you intend to wear them when you look through the optic.  ;)

Scope 1X4 or 2X7 is one option that works good......
Have low power for close shooting longer range shooting out to say 500
works good......
A good name scope will give you less problems and last....leupold, burris, etc...

I just replaced this Monarch with a 6.5-20x50 Zeiss on my 204 upper.  Going to go out and play with it Saturday.

On my RRA Elite Tactical 16", I have a Bushnell Elite 10x40 Mil dot, with Burris Tactical High Rise rings.  Ive seen this setup on several Barretts, so Im confident the scope can handle anything. Its been a great setup. I picked up the scope and rings NIB on Ebay. The scope for $120, and the rings $35. Including shipping, less than $175 for the whole lot.

As far the CQB/SBR rifle Im going to build up, Im looking at the Eotech, with Troy Flip-up co-witness. Ive used this setup before and was very well pleased. Ive never used an AGOG so Im unable to give an educated opinion, however my Brother In Law is in the Marines and and has seen action in Afganistan and Iraq, and cant say enough good things about it.
