Camping is the answer, if you can't go for a week backpacking, carrying everything you need, you are screwed.
Go camping in your living room, then your backyard, then to a KOA campground, the a NPS campground, then a wilderness campground, then a couple hour hike away from the truck , then a day hike away, then a two day hike, then a week hiking trip.
And learn what you can eat while in the wilderness, Idaho has so much stuff you can gather while hiking, game everywhere(In season hunting of course) all bets are off during a SHTF or Alien attack!
