Decent Butane Lighter?
« on: January 04, 2009, 06:55:54 AM »
I've got my magnesium blocks for starting fires but also want something more conventional for when magnesium scrapings just aren't appropriate. I've been looking at the eGear Fire One butane lighter, supposedly made by Windmill: http://cgi.ebay.com/eGear-Fire-One-Butane-Lighter-NEW_W0QQitemZ190247684996QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?_trksid=p3286.m20.l1116
Decent or are there others I should consider? Thx!...

I have one similar to this. I like it as it puts out a very hot flame. BUT, a few of the drawbacks are:

1. The flame is not very high, and it is hard to light things like a stove, lantern (Impossible), or even a bigger candle, because you have to get the flame so close. (If you light a small stick, paper etc.. you can get around that)

2. The butane supply in these things get used up FAST!!!!! I used up the initial supply just playing with the dumb thing for a week. Then went and refilled it. Which makes me wonder if it's a good choice for a survival lighter, as you should probably carry extra butane.

It lights everytime, and is a cool little design, but after I got back from a camping trip with the lighter, I just threw it in my truck as an emergency lighter. I Prefer something that actually has a flame of a couple of inches.

Just my thoughts. And I didn't pay that much for mine at a local store somewhere around here, I don't remember, but I do see them form time to time.

I like good old fashioned strike anywhere matches w/waterproof container.

Thx for the input! After more research I've decided to go w/the Windmill Trekker to complement the matches/magnesium I already have (I went w/the clear one for $23.76): http://www.amazon.com/Windmill-Trekker-Stormproof-Lighter-Clear/dp/B000Z40Z42/ref=pd_bbs_1?ie=UTF8&s=sporting-goods&qid=1231081696&sr=8-1

Match Blaster from Sawtac.

I got this for Christams and it is by far the best survival fire starter I have ever seen.

And yes I have a pile of older stuff that will get passed onto nephew and nieces to play with....

But I will be buying a match blaster for all our family BOB's

I was looking for one to use with SAR, and looked into those nice ones pushing $100. Eventually I settled with a Coleman. It has the nice hot flame, solidly built, and weather sealed. I think I paid $14 or so.
