Who here puts in a garden in the spring?  Even though I still live in an apartment, I'm going to try my hand at growing some vegetables in containers on my back patio.  What I need to know is when I should plant different species.  Any input is welcome.

You can start them now but keep them inside.  The last freeze is usually the last week of May or first of June.  If you put them outside just make sure that you cover them when it gets cold.

Make sure to transition them.  Meaning put the new plants outside when it's warm and bring them back in when it cools down.  Too much cold or hot can kill them off.  Make sure you don't over water the container or you stand a good chance of getting root rot.

+1  I usually wait for the snow to be off bogus, or use wall o' waters.  Or I just buy when they have strong plants

seeds will come up when it's time

Is nobody else here putting in a garden?  I'm looking for recommendations for what to plant.  I"ll certainly do tomatoes and maybe some peppers.  What is popular here?

The fun fer me & my kids is to have vegetables that you can walk out & eat right off the vine.

Besides tomatoes  (sweet100s to early girls & heirloom types) & peppers ( bell, wax & hot)  . I just put in beans, cucumbers ( pickling, Armenian) , zucchini...one is enough ;D, melons (water, cantaloupe & honeydew)  radishes herbs like Basil, a lot of the other herbs are perennial, like oregano & rosemary,   strawberries, I want to put in asparagus yet

put in some sunflowers for the kids too.  we have a peach, apricot & plum tree

For some reason "melons" stuck out in your post...

Thanks for the tips.  I'll let you know how it goes.

A good way to grow tomatoes in an apartment, is to use a big black garbage bag. Fill it 3/4 of the way with soil, then poke holes in it. Put you seeds in the holes. Hang it up outside, and your good to go.

This is our vegetable garden.  That's my favorite field hand in the background.

Corn, spuds, tomatoes, various peppers, onions, squash, pumpkins (for the Tannerite), and a couple of other things.

I'm a big fan of radishes but havent planted any yet...I did however plant a bunch of jalepeno plants.  They're all in pots on my patio, so far so good.  Should be ready by July.

[img]If we're talking preparedness, you have to have allot of space and a variety of crops. I do have a bit more space than a few boxes. It is great to have the skills that come with experience. I've put up my own raspberry and elderberry jelly for years. Just stay ahead of the weeds...

Do you remember where i live?  you can get them anytime.  they are on the west side yard.  I also have some red, but red iris is sorta a rusty red...kinda early for the division but they were taking over an area & I had to do something

Good info for saving and harvesting seeds for your next grow season.

Basic Seed Saving describes useful terms and concepts central to seed saving.

I miss growing at my old home. had 2/3 of acre, and over 21 mature fruit trees, Apples, Oranges, Oro Blanco Grapefruit, Peach, Plum, Blood Orange's. I never could eat it all, and often gave away quite a bit, and still had plenty left over.
