Rain water Collection
« on: December 29, 2008, 08:13:12 AM »
After yesterday's melt and seeing all the water come off my roof, and still coming off my roof. I'm looking into rainwater collection.

Anyplace local to pickup supplies, what do you guys recommend.

How do you use the rainwater? For drinking/cooking and for general use around the house? Do you need a pump, etc...

Also, how do you keep a rainwater barrel from freezing in the winter and ruining your barrel? Or is that even and issue?

Any good links on the net? I found a few wondering what else is around?

I think I could have watered my lawn for a month with what came off the roof yesterday. Got me thinking.

There's a guy behind my sister-in-law's house who has a setup to collect rain water.  He's taken 6 of those blue 55 gallon drums, like the ones you get from the soda bottlers, and stacked them up in a triangle formation.  He then connected them together by pvc pipe and fittings going into the threaded access holes already in the drums.  His gutter downspout goes directly into the top drum and thus fills up all the drums when it rains.

I hope I described this ok.  Next time we're at the range, remind me and I can draw a picture of the system for you.

Thanks, I found most of those. Was mostly curious if anyone around here was doing it and any issues they had run into, or gotcha's, so to speak.

I like some of the prettier rain barrels that you can get, but I'm not interested in a $150/barrell solution.

I know the eagle place will have container's for sale, is there any place else around that I could acquire cheaper barrels? or do I even want to?

Thanks,

Brian

Those should be the plastic ones... I need to get over there.
