Outdoor shooting
« on: December 23, 2008, 10:48:24 PM »
Since Blacks Creek is for the birds now, where do you guys go to shoot? I want to go this weekend somewhere and try my new trigger on my AK. Is there any where near Boise that you can do this??

Thanks! 8)

What's the deal with Blacks Creek?

I haven't shot there; when I've headed out there, I just end up shooting somewhere nearby instead.

Go south of the airport, past the jails... once south of the massive powerlines you're legal to shoot (prior to that you're mostly in the "Bird of Prey" reserve... can't shoot there apparently)

before the power lines used to be open for shooting.  The area got trashed and the shooters got moved further out in the desert.  Most places close to residential areas are getting closed and solely due to the noise.  Last summer there was a proposal to close off a huge area of the desert due to all of us supposedly being a bunch of trashy, drunken, atv-riding tank shooters.  Judging from the trash out there the last time I went, I'm sure we'll have to go further out in the desert soon.
You know what I think?  It don't really matter what I think.

Assholes not cleaning up after themselves is what got Blacks Creek closed down. And yeah, it was shooters to (a large part of it was shooters).

There's no shortage of brass and shotgun shells under the power lines either, as well as the remains of targets people haul out there and leave behind.

Where is Blacks Creek shut down?

BLM shut down the far northern part of the Birds of Prey area to anything but shotguns and muzzleloaders due to potential hazards with long-range projectiles, but that doesn't sound like the shutdown you guys are talking about.

I agree about the debris problem; in other places, groups have organized to do regular cleanups in order to keep shooting areas open. Perhaps we could start doing that.

Here's an example of such a group: http://www.carrizocreekrange.org/

Another member told me about this place.  It's close and suitable for pistol and rimfire shooting.  I think when the weather gets better we should organize a work party to clean it up and hopefully keep it open to the public.

Your right, and it will be the next spot to go. We've already had one major clean up out there. Lasted about six months.........

Both spots A and B are good for small and large caliber but B has a bigger back stop.
Shot me a PM if you are heading out and I will try to join you.
This is in my back yard and my shooting spot for the last 6 years never had an issue.
