"A Sheboygan County man who would have turned 59 on Christmas Day froze to death over the weekend after his SUV veered off the road in a snowstorm less than a mile from his home, according to the Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Department."

good point. even if you have to walk a few blocks, at least it ups the comfort level or if you live a ways out or drive through dead cell-phone areas. A hat and gloves too!

Each vehicle should have a winter kit in it.  You should have warm close in your BOB but you should have a lot more than that.  When I travel (even local areas) I take food, stove, extra winter clothes, heater, snow shoes, etc.  Someone once said, "Be prepared."  Good advice.  ;)
Q: What was the most positive result of the "Cash for Clunkers" program?
A: It took 95% of the Obama bumper stickers off the road.

It reads as if the man had dressed in layers and had a coat. May have been stunned by the crash and become disoriented. I guess we'll never know. Sad just the same.

It's a typical story. Remember the brainy tech guy that got lost/stuck in the snow in Oregon(I believe) with his family? The family stayed with the rig while he went looking for a way out. The family survived and he was found dead in an unusual place for the mission he undertook.

It really helps if you stay with the rig. It is a SHELTER.

Blankets and fire starting gear in all rigs. Tires burn, seats burn, materials in jockey boxes burn, airfilters burn ...

Agreed.
That story is actually pretty interesting, since I lived in Medford at the time (pretty close to where it happened). Kim was trying to take a shortcut as advised by google maps or some such trip router. He obviously wasn't that bright as he kept driving till he got stuck... he didn't just slide off. There was just too much snow on the road. He also knew enough to burn the tires for heat... though why he did that so soon I'm not sure. I think he was found with little clothing on (and some strewn around over a distance) off the road a ways... uh, probably hypothermia got to him... basically what gets me is the news made him out to be some dramatic hero 'because he sacrificed his life for his family." Rubbish! He made bad choices, was  unprepared, and was later even stupid in what he did... and he's being celebrated for that.
Prepare so you don't get 'celebrated' for being ill-prepared.

From what I remember reading, his wife ragged on him about it being his fault and how he should go and find help until he finally agreed to try to walk out. I think he knew it wasn't necessarily the right thing to do, guilt (and worry about his family) helped him along.
Necessity is the plea for every infringement of human freedom. It is the argument of tyrants; it is the creed of slaves.  ~William Pitt
