Coyote Hunting
« on: December 05, 2008, 10:59:18 AM »
A buddy of mine and our boys would all like to try and do some coyote hunting.  My friend has a call, but hasn't used it or hunted them in many years.

Anyone wanna offer up some hunt location ideas??  :)

Thanks.

a month ago I went and purchased a set of calls and a DVD on coyote hunting. I would LOVE to find some real tips (the dvd was useless as it was just video of guys doing it with no hints at all) from some guys who have done this. I envisioned going out on the MPRC and finding a nice little bowl to stake out but I admit I dont know any of the call techniques for these things I bought. Let me know what you find out.

The MPRC is pretty thin on coyotes because of all the people (Spiff/JollyRoger got one there a year or two ago).  Head out a little further in any direction and you'll do better.  I've heard good things about south by Murphy and up by Fairfield and over by Burley.  ;)

Chances are you can find coyotes almost anywhere though.  I did talk to one guy last year that had bagged over 200 before Thanksgiving but he was heading towards the Nevada border.

ok, dumb question here, is there a season that is not good for coyotes? ??? I would think winter is good because food is scarce but I dont know that for a fact, just guessing.  :(Bumber about the MPRC, perhaphs the back side toward Mountain home, just thinking close and easy... hmm

Winter is best if you want to save the hides.  I was just told that you can sell a stretched hide to a fur buyer for $35.

The further away from the population centers the better the hunting.  Like for most anything else.  ;)  Except zombies.

I have still not seen a coyote, at least when I had a gun.

To heck with those 60 grainers!!  I was thinking about taking out "little Mac" and using a 175 grainer....at about 600 yards sounds good to me!!

Long shots sound fun but I've rarely seen a coyote come to one of my stands that was over 75 yards out before we saw him.  With all the sage brush around here they sneak in and are hard to see way out there.  But, with the right location I'm sure you could do it.

NGO shot one off my electronic caller that was 99 yards out.  I never saw him because I was watching the other direction.

Sometimes they pop up so close that you can't get on them fast enough because of the optics.  I've pseudo-joked several times that the shooter should have gone to their sidearm.

That works for me too.  Last summer my pops and I were shooting full sized poppers with my SVI that I ranged a 176 yards.  I could only get about 6 out of 10 though.  10 for 10 on the 100 yarder though.  Coyotes with a pistol....I like it!!

240, Hubby, anyone else with some experience...  ;)  A group hunt might be kinda fun... although I'm not sure how big of a group we'd want.  I will have the week between Christmas and New Years off from work... I'm open then, for sure.

I did wonder about the Murphy area.  My brother in law, who I'm really not on good terms with, hunts them down toward the Nevada border.

I'm not into taking them for the pelts.  I simply want to get rid of some of the predators!!  If we get a group going, you can have any pelt that I get... and you can skin the damn thing too!   ;)

Last one I took was at 178 yards....right up his ass side and out his chest. By the time it made its way thru him it took out his heart and one lung.  That was a 40 grn CCI three small pieces of bullet was found in the lung, one small hole out the front chest cavity.

Did mention these were with a Marlin 60SS in 22lr??? ;D

Personally, I find more than 2 or 3 people to be too many.  You'd be better off finding someone with some experience and talking them into taking you out.  ;)

Jeff is right any more then 2 or 3 is too much. Ive tried taking out 4 people before and its just never really worked out.

Long shots are possible but hard to get. I went out this morning and saw 3 dogs, one was about 450 yards but he knew we were there and was long gone before we even got a chance to get the rifle shouldered. We did see a second one even farther out but he was busy chasing mule deer so we didn't even try. The third we caught in the middle of a bunch of cows and took off and was into Nevada before we could even get out the truck.

some of the best time to hunt is from about October up till through march and April when they are mating, but as the season progresses they get harder to call and you have to resort to different calls and using decoys.

Wind and movement are your 2 biggest enemy's especially if you are using a mouth call since the dogs will "home" in on where the noise is, good camouflage and setup will help, but staying still is paramount.

If you are using any type of disstress calls you need to pay attention to the wind since most seasoned dogs will circle to get a sniff of what is making the noise, with howling they aren't so much concerned with what is making the noise but why is there unknown dog in my area.

if you all have any more questions fire away i coyote hunt more then anything else.

Ok, being a typical consumer I bought these a month or so ago because the guy at the counter said it was the most popular set of calls he had. can anyone tell me which call is the howl if there even is one? I am grossly dissapointed in the DVD because I thought it would give you tips on how to use them etc and it doesnt do that at all. To me both of these sound like distressed animal calls but I am certainly no expert. Advice?

I have those same calls and they work really well.

The red one is a combo howl/distress call you can do both, it works best for howling thought since that's what it was designed for. To howl use your top lip or teeth to apply pressure to the reed and gently slide back to change tone of howl. it definitely takes some practice to howl but once you get it down you can really piss off some coyotes.

The little one is the Ki-Yi, a disstress call you can move the Little o-ring that is around the the reed to get diffrent sounds. For rabbit distress just try to sounds like a crying baby, then put some emotion into it it and that's pretty much what a dying jack rabbit sounds like, for cottontail just move the o-ring and do the same, it will just be higher pitched. You can also do a hurt dog or pup distress with this call as well, just move the o-ring and try to sound like a hurt pup, this call works best in late spring when the have pups, but most dogs will respond to it regard less or time of year.

check with cabelas , every once in a while they have professional coyote hunters come in and give calling seminars, and some of those guys can really call.

Never been specifically hunting coyotes before but I've seen a bunch while hunting the other animals I didn't see  :'(.  Some people have said to put out a stuffed toy rabbit in an open area and do a wounded animals call. Does this work? Any advice?

yea it will work but if you can make the decoy move it adds even more realism to it.

The decoy i am using now is just a cat toy that was a mouse on a spring, but my wife took a coon skin cap and cut it up and glued it over the mouse. I then just attached some 550 cord to it and pull it to make it move. Its not the best but it adds realism to the calling and keeps them focused on the decoy and away from me so i can adjust or bring the rifle up.

The best "decoy" that I have found is my dog.  I have a couple of heelers that I take along sometimes, and when the yotes see them they do not care about anything else.  I don't know if they are lookin for love or protecting their territory but it works really well.  The only problem is I will not shoot if my dogs are too close to me--ears--now if I could just get them to wear hearing protection.  Winter is the easiest time for calling because food gets harder for them to find.  In the summer, distress calls don't work to well but howls and barks work ok.  In the spring puppy distress calls are good.  In my area, lots of little farms, I have a domestic house cat distress call that works great year round.  The cat call works for everything -- cats, dogs, yotes, bobcats and lions.

I've got a friend who puts a cat in a carrier and takes it with.  Swears that that yowling cat calls in more dogs than anything.
