550 Powder Measure
« on: April 09, 2007, 05:46:22 AM »
After reading up on how to tune up my measures, I called Dillon and asked if I could still get the return springs. I want to get away from the clunky linkage that the "new improved versions" have. The guy on the phone said " sure no problem". I asked how much I owed, he said how about a thank you. I said THANK YOU. Thats it. I can say this about Dillon, They take good care of customers. Truly no B.S.  :D

You'll have to post and let us know how you like the return spring setup. I haven't had any problems with the linkage, but if the spring is better...........

I just polished one of my powder measures and did the retrograde (temporary using a rubber-band).  It's working SO much better now.  I'm throwing RL-15 the way it should now.  I set up for 24 grains and just threw 10 for a total or 240.2 grains.  I didn't check each load but I can if someone really thinks that it's important.

Here are some pics to see how to test the retrograde.  Just disconnect the spring on the "clunker" and use a big rubber-band.  I'll be ordering some of the springs to replace the rubber-band.

I just did this on my Square Deal press.  I called Dillon and asked for a couple replacement springs for my 650 and got them for free.  No questions asked since I've purchased from them before.  My old 650 was setup with the return springs and definitely worked smoother than the "clunk clunk" of the new style.

I got my springs from Cliff.  No charge.  :D

Just to update things:  I sold the powder measure I was using for the extruded powders and bought a Chargemaster.  I use an AT500 powder die and funnel and am so much happier.  Every charge seems right on (verified by beam scale).  It's a little slower but I think it's worth it.

The Dillon powder measure is great will ball and flake powder and I still use it with my pistol loads (so far I'm only using flake powder).

Also, for those thinking maybe they'll use the Chargemaster for pistol I can verify that while it works the Chargemaster takes forever to dump the small charges (for example 3.4gr of Clays).  It's not worth the wasted time waiting for the Chargemaster over setting up the Dillon powder measure.

I was bored this weekend so I did a little moification on the powder measure on my Square Deal press.

I didn't like that big braket hanging down and in the way and since it wasn't needed any longer I decided to modify it.
