Land nav course??
« on: November 18, 2008, 02:36:04 PM »
I hate to say this but I don't read a compass well. I have read a few books but I think I need "hands on" training. Where can I find this type class in boise?

I found a lot of good info by hooking up with these guys:
http://www.goarmy.com/

http://www.idahoarmyguard.org/2-116/2-116.asp

Actually, we did a land nav pizza night about a month or two ago, just before hunting season.  We got a really great response on the website as far as people that were interested, but when it came time to show up the turn out was about what we get on a normal night...even less in fact.  I wouldnt be opposed to doing another class with RG, but would like to get more people involved if possible.

Hell, on second thought if we cant get a class together I'd be willing to go 'hiking' with a group of dudes to go over some land nav stuff.  I always learn better by being in the field practicing it anyway.  Let me know and maybe we'll get something set up.

Well not to toot my own horn( yes I said toot and I stand by it) I was a battalion land nav NCO.  There is not a whole lot I dont know about it.  I have many maps of this area If you guys just want to go out hiking that would be cool, could give a pretty good class.   Might as well put all those skills to some kind of use other than drug running.

Thats probably enough we just need a date.  I will start putting together the materials.  I should have everything together for this week end but it doesnt matter.   I will try and pick a good place nothing real flat right now as that is the hardest to navigate.  If you give me enough time I could even set up a course.  I only have one lensatic compas but any one should do with degrees on it.  I will provide the temporary maps.  Just let me know.

How about Sat. Dec 6th?  Lets get a count going on who can make it the 6th.

If you can not make it Sat. the 6th lets do a count for Sunday the 7th also. Then we can decide which day would be the easier for the people interested.

FWIW, you are never going to pick a date that will work for everyone.  IMO, pick a date and run with it.  Then do it again for the others (that can make that date).  ;)

weeds out the ones who aren't 100% committed...  8)

Might be a smaller class that way.... ;)

But then you might have little trouble explaining how you lost people in the desert....."I gave the land nav test before I gave the class"  Now that would get you some looks!!  LOL

Knowing you I would not be to surprised if you arranged to lose one or two people just so you had a chance to organize the search team and try out the gear!  8) It does sound like good times as long as we could find them before the weekend was over.

I am thinking the 7th at the Kuna Mora road exit east of Boise.  There is an over east of the freeway I am going to set up the course there as there are alot fo nice hills.  I will set up a pace count check and all of that.  If this is good with everyone I was thinking about 1300 on the 7th.

So the 7th at 1300 at the Kuna Mora Rd. exit off 85.  There is a pull off right there at the exit we could meet up at then play follow the leader to the area which isnt much further.  That would be 1300 when we head out from the exit to the final sight.  I will try and keep posted on the weather but no matter what shouldnt harm anything as this is also a good experience.

Had a great time. Though I did not do as well as I thought I would, I'm pretty sure that if my destinations had been a camp instead of drinking cups, I'd have found them. Course if the camp was 5 miles away instead of 500 meters away, it might be a different story.

Megan and I await 240-rifles next class!!

Well I am allready scouting another area probably somewhere south of Marsing about the jump creek area.  Would be a hike just to get to it but would be fun.  Might wait till it warms up unless nobody minds the cold.
